I am very fond of both of these breeds, but we picked a Border Collie puppy this summer. We have a 3 and 5 yr old, both boys, and the puppy gets along FINE with our children.

Border Collies are not the dog for everyone and require intense dedication from their owners. BC's are very intelligent and need a lot of excercise. Due to the intelligent factor, the daily walk isn't really enuf for them either. They need a job to do, so if you go with a BC, I highly suggest you to persue proper training and consider doing obedience competition and/or agility, both sports these dog excel at.

BC's do better in a home where someone is around most of the time. In our case, I'm a stay at home mom during the day and then work a couple nites a week, so my hubby is home. Our BC doesn't spend much time without our family.

They are a really great dog, but please do your research on this breed as so many don't and they end up in a rescue/shelter because the owners didn't realize what type of commitment and dog they were getting into.

I have owned a cross between the two, and she was without question the smartest and friendliest dog I've known. Border Collies are wonderful and loving if they are in the right home. They need lots of play and walks and outdoor activity, with lots of cuddles at home. If you can't provide them with lots of activity, don't get one because they may become neurotic due to boredom.......I see someone else answered that their border collie was mean. That's so not their nature.......that's an environmental cause. German Shepards are also wonderful animals, but are prone to hip problems, so watch where they come from. A Shepard mix from your local resuce society is the best way to go.

Before deciding which breed to get you need to know something about them.

Do you live in the county or in the city? Is it going to be a house dog? Do you live next to a busy road. Do you have kids? Are you home a lot or very little?

Border Collies are very hyper. If you don't have time to spend with them they will always be in trouble. They have herding in their genes so they will try to herd cars (chase), kids and the neighbors livestock.

They may nip at the kids when they try to place tag (like they do when herding).

With all dogs you have to train them so you need to ask yourself questions like do you have time? What training methods are you doing to use positive or snap and jerk (not recommenced).

German Shepherds are a large dog so make sure you have room for them.

I would suggest using a Gentle Leader on either dog and the clicker to train them with, Join obedience classes and get them socialized early on.

Research other breeds, check out the pound and other local rescues.

Good luck!

If you are considering purchasing a Border Collie, I strongly strongly recommend that you research the breed thoroughly and talk to breeders as well as other Border Collie owners. This breed is just not meant for everyone, they need a job to do and if they do not have one they are very unhappy pets.

German Sheppard!

My mom has a border collie and, I swear, it's the meanest and most uneven tempered dog I have ever come in contact with.

Putting my biases aside, a border collie is also not recommended for houses with children.

Both very intelligent breeds, but border collies tend to do a lot of damage when they get bored. They need a lot of stimpulation, not much into laying around. If you have kids or have kids around, I would suggest a german shepherd, they're really good with kids.

Although both are herding breeds, they have very different personalities & energy levels. You should thoroughly research both before making a choice. Go to www.akc.org to find if any breed club chapters are near enough for you to go to club meeting & talk to owners & breeders. If not, read as much as possible about each breed. Good luck!

border collies love to be near you all the time and under foot. they also need alot more exercise than a shepard to keep from being overweight. i love shepards too. when they get older shepards are a little more relaxed too. sheps are very protective of their families so you need to think about how youll keep him in your area ,like alot of other kids around or strangers. sheps are very protective just keep that in mind

there are no best it depends on your lifestyle and what you want from a dog. they are both fairly big dogs and can both have everything you need towards being a good dog. they are both strong minded and need firm training. they both can be stubborn lively and too protective at times. its all aboout the upbringing you provide. go for any but be prepared for hard work and plenty of training for both breeds.
