You include an envelope with your name as the addressee and put a stamp on it. It is used to return something to you without the sender needing a stamp or envelope.

A self-addressed envelope (or S.A.E, which can also stand for Stamped, Addressed Envelope) is one which you address TO yourself.

There are a variety of reasons which you might need one. However a good example is: When you send in a job application, some companies will ask you to include a S.A.E. They will then post this back to you to let you know that they have received your application, but no-one at the office has to bother writing it out individually (for places which receive thousands of applications, you can understand this!)

It means you apply your address on the front of the envelope and send it to another person so they can use it to send you something in that envelope. Usually, its a self addressed stamped envelope, which means you provide the stamp also.

A self-addressed envelope is an envelope that you prepare and send with your message to make it more convenient for the recipient of your mail to respond. Many people who send free information by mail will ask for a self-addressed, stamped envelope (abbrieviated SASE), so that they can just enclose the information in the envelope and they don't have to pay postage, neither do you have to enclose a small check or money order for the postage (since money cannot be sent by mail).

To reply to a query or application, they often request you to send an envelope with your own address on it, usually with a stamp as well. This will save them the cost of an envelope and stamp, and will ensure that your address is correct.

An envelope that is addressed to you. It is generally used by people who have something you want mailed to you. You give them the envelope with your address already on it and all they have to do is put the infomation inside the envelope and mail it. It saves them the hassle of copying your address, and the cost of buying envelopes.

This is when you are sent an envelope with the address of the sender already printed on it in order to make it simpler for you to sent something back to the sender. If you've been asked to include one, send an empty envelope with your name and address on it.

I'll give you a perfect example. I just sent in my property taxes by mail, in order to receive a receipt I sent them a self addressed and stamped envelope. It's where you write your name and address on the envelope. It's pretty strange getting mail to yourself FROM yourself lol but it saved me a trip into town and I avoided the long lines in the court house.
