do scotties have rough,brtistley hair? or is it soft?
i would prefer answer from those who own one or have pettted one, not read about them....thanks =]

Both.
They have a bristlier undercoat and the longer coat you see is soft.
But, when you get them groomed where they shave the back very short, they feel like velvet.

I have three Scotties (the best little doggies in da world) two males, one female, and one of them have the more coarse, bristly coat and the other two has the soft, fine coats.
They all have a double coat, and on the one with the wiry coat you can definitely see the difference in the two layers, as with the ones with the soft coat, it's almost like "one" coat.
Personally the wiry topcoat is easier to take care of and doesn't tangle as much. I bought this product called "Cowboy Magic" recommended by another Scottie lover and it works wonderfully keeping the tangles minimized on my softer coated Scotties.

Rough coat is prefered (and required for the show ring), but some individuals have a softer outer coat. Also, it can be affected by how the dog is groomed: hand stripping gives them the 'correct coat' for showing, but most pet people have their dogs clippered. They feel very different done that way.

A soft coat would be an *EXTREMELY* BAD ***FAULT***!!!!
A HAND-STRIPPED breed !!! To *KEEP* that coat!!!Clippering RUINS it!
