I'm looking for a bottle of absinthe for a friend's birthday. Does anyone know where I can buy some in the UK, either from an actually reputable online site or a common shop (in central London) with around a £30 budget? Also, I'm a bit confused about the different types - some have extra chemicals - I'm preferably looking for the traditional-boho-Parisian-artist type, i.e. strong! Many thanks!!

Absinthe is readily available to ship from overseas. try using these sites which in my experience have been the best with shipping, prices and customer support...and their selection isnt bad either.

You can't buy real absinthe anymore b/c it has been banned by most countries in the modern world due to the health risk involved with the wormwood that was used in it. There are several close imitations out there, but I doubt they'll have the same effect. Like anything else though I bet if you looked on the black market in like Czech or another European country i am sure you could possibly find the real stuff.

The best idea would be to try small local independant shops like licensed local shops - In Glasgow we can get it in most shops at around £30 a bottle (with a few to choose from) so London should be the same - Just consume very wisely!

Good Luck!

absinthe in the uk is only legal below 70% abv i think. if you want any stronger stuff then i think you might have to go online to get it from europe where they have stronger variations eg 78 % as opposed to some 68% stuff here. i dont know where you could get it without actual going to continental europe.
you could probably buy legal uk absinthe from a good off licence anywhere.

As far as I know Absinthe is only available in Switzerland ( I live there) it has been illegal for years because of its effects on the people who drink it or at least one too many, it has a habit of turning a normal person very violent, that is why it was banned, here it is called the Green Fairy, and it was made legal this year or last I think, so if you do find some be careful

I wouldn't really, especially if there's a chance it will get opened on the big day and passed round when everyone has already had a few. If you want to get your friend something classy for the money, how about a bottle of Armagnac?

It's amazing how much misinformation there is about absinthe that people pass off as fact.

You can buy LaFee Parisian at tescos.

99% of the absinthe you order online and ship to America is crap. It will not make you hallucinate. It is just a really strong, really bad tasting liquor.

I'm not sure about Britain though.

I've seen it in almost every shop that sells alcohol. All types I've seen are stong, at least 40% ABV. The thing that sets it apart is not the strength, but the wormwood (artemisia absinthium - hence the name absinthe) that is supposed to have hallucinogenic properties.
