It's called "Do as I say, not as I do".
Edit: The reality of it is that sometimes the most effective way we learn something is through experience, by making the mistake ourselves. This isn't always the best way, however, because that mistake can sometimes cost us dearly, even to the point of death or to the point that we can't recover from it, and we become trapped inside that mistake. The better way to learn, most times, is through example, learn from someone else's mistakes rather than making them ourselves. Someone not wanting else to make the mistakes they've made, to learn from example rather than experience, may seem to be hypocrites but they are actually looking out for our best interests.

It's called don't male the same mistakes that I did and/or do. I know lots of junkies and or people who abuse substances (work related) that would give that same advice to people who were considering trying a heavy drug. And I'm sorry that I don't view it as being hypocritical but rather they are trying to save the other person from a live that they have come to know.

He/she could be a hypocrite, but still , he/she might know how bad it is that even he/she can't get out of, that's why he/she doesn't want you to get into it
