I know Plasmas are supposed to be transported upright. How about LCDs? Is it safe to bring one home from the store laying down flat?It will be in its factory shipping box, so no worries about physical breakage...

An LCD should be okay. The reason any of the LCD's suggest not to is because there is a risk of knocking small pieces out of place if you hit a bump very har.d. Other than that, if you're careful, there is no reason you couldn't lay it down. At CostCo where I work, I've never had an LCD returned because it was laid on its side.
On plasmas, the only reason you can't lay them on their side is because the sheet of glass over the screen is so large with only minimal bracing that any sort of a decent bump can shatter that glass. A lot of people think it's because you'll have the "plasma" run to one side or the other, but the fact is, there is no plasma in a plasma tv. It actually works like just over a million tiny little flourescent bulbs. However, if you MUST lay it down, you can do so if you're incredibly careful. And in all fairness, the order not to lay it down if for the store. If we laid some on their sides on a pallet and stacked the tv's, they would crack the glass without a doubt.

LCD is more reliable with a longer screen life, Plasma has more danger of getting the screen burn in by a non changing image if left unattended for more than 15 minutes and also has the possibility of getting damaged due to gas leakage. Between the two Plasma has the better image, but in my opinion I would go with a LCD tv.....
