I have a terrible problem of scratching my legs until they bleed. Nobody knows why. I am confident in mysepf I have long beautiful legs(well they are without all those scratch marks) I just scratch till they bleed whenever it itches because it feels good, but after scratching it hurts.
I take benedryl at night sometimes it helps a little. Some docs say it's nervousness or a nerve itch.
So I was wondering if taking a cold to icy cold shower would help soothe my scratches?

Crystal is correct!! Cold showers do soothe, however work into it a bit! Start out with a normal shower and slowly cool the water down! I'm a nurse but my answer is more because I was hit by a car while walking and had the worst road rash imaginable! when it started healing I thought if I could just peel the skin off and remove it to the bone I would be the happiest person in the world! But, alas, this is not possible, so my Doc. suggested the shower method! It works and after a few days I could actually go to bed without scratching my legs to a bloody pulp!
Keep your nails short and after your shower if you still want to scratch use a cloth and rub gently. During the night you may be scratching sub-consciously and your back to square one. If your nails are short your less likely to cause bleeding and then infection! neosporin is the best cream to use so I would get a tube of it, especially the one that has a pain reliever in it!
Good luck!

cold shower or hot...I dont think so..
Warm shoer reducesthe oil on ur body and will cause greater dryness and therefore itchyness.
I think u should keep ur legs covered when u go out...maybe that helps.
Also not what season the itchyness decreases. Do u have a plant/animal inside or outside ur home/workingplace causing the problem??
Maybe u need to check with a dermatologist..could be ur soap causing the problem.
Its possible ur food has something in it...try changing something u take regularly like cows milf or some brand.
It looks like an allergy. Use Oil (plain like almond/sunflower )
this is usually good for allegies. Apply it on wet skin right after a shower. Dont worry the oil is bound to disappear and dont forget to message it in gently.
Best of Luk.

Listen, I have the same "nervous scratch", but not so bad that I make myself bleed too often. Unless it is a mosquito bite, THEN I will scratch it until it bleeds.....for some reason I would rather it hurt than have it itch like that - it drives me crazy! The cold shower would DEFINITELY decrease any swelling and heat to those areas....I guess, in essence....soothing them. After you have done that, then rub a triple antibiotic ointment on them such as neosporin extra strength. It contains a medicine that gives a little numbing action while it heals. GOOD LUCK!

Hi Snorty
Itch's are very misunderstood and in your case it souds like an internal issue. Here are a few ideas on how to heal the conditiion.
Cause
Itch is caused by various germs or bacteria trying to clean the body through the pores of the skin (instead of through the kidneys and the bowels) resulting in formation of pustules or rashes accompanied by intense itching.
Herbal Aids
1.General Instructions: For itch and other skin problems, use a fomentation over the irritated area made with chickweed tea and/or plantain, burdock root, Oregon grape root, and echinacea--covered with plastic. Or, bathe the area with the tea a number of times during the day. Chickweed or plantain ointment is an aid for small outbreaks. Drink a cup of the tea two or three times or more a day. To each cup of the tea you drink add three to six drops of tincture of lobelia.
2.Plantain and Yellow Dock: Make a strong tea of equal parts of plantain and yellow dock , and bathe the affected area frequently as a wash.
3.Itch Ointment: See formula using burdock root, olive oil and bee's wax.
4.Black Walnut: Black walnut tincture can be applied on itching skin. This works especially well if the irritation is due to a fungus or similar invasion. One ounce of powdered golden seal root mixed with nine ounces of pure, food-grade linseed oil (not paint store linseed oil) can be applied externally with good results. White poplar bark tea should be taken internally.
5.Poke: The skin is an indicator of toxicity in the body. Poke is a good remedy for skin problems. It is also good for "the itch" in cases of scabies. Anytime you have skin which doesn't eliminate properly along with vitiated blood, you can well use Poke. It is said to be a great eliminator of toxins out of the system. Usually the glands are not performing properly in these conditions so the herb works on both areas. It is often used in chronic eczema, syphilitic eruptions, psoriasis, varicose veins and leg ulcers.
6.Plantain: Plantain bruised, or juiced in a juicer, and placed over the sting or bite will generally bring relief within a short time. The pain and itch will cease and the swelling will leave.
Best of health to you
Cheers

Icy cold. The scalding hot would burn the skin while the cold would just be cold and you might get a cold.
