Easy to tell. Just look under the hood near the radiator area for the tag with all the info. It will be the one that gives the engine size, car year, etc. On that tag will be the line "This vehicles conforms to all Federal and California emission requirements for the year 1998 if it is California certified. If it just says Federal then it is not. Works on all cars sold in this country from 1968 forward. They have to "specifically" state California for it to be so. Only exception I know is that some are reputed to have the wording of "all 50 states" but haven't seen that myself.

there will an emissions sticker under your hood that will say just what it was designed for. It will say Federal emissions 49 states
or will say California which are stricter than everybody else. with calif. emissions it can go anywhere, but with 49 state standers
i guess you might be stuck
