I'm sorry for your loss. I, as well as 2 other of my friends have a memory tattoo for our friend who passed away. It really does help and knowing that I am forever linked to 2 other people is comforting.

Numbing is not required nor is it recommended. As the article below explains "no pain, no gain."

I could paraphrase the article but it's short and I believe you would benefit much more by reading it yourself.

Good luck!

Remember this is a forever thing. I've never had a lower back tat done but from people that I know that have gotten them they say that it's a painful area. As far as numbing the area, I've never heard of it, but if you can't take pain very well then being tattooed isn't for you, cuz they all hurt to some degree. A lot depends on your tolerance to pain and the location of you tat, and the artist, some are heavy hitters and some aren"t but you won't know until you get into it and then it's to late. Before you get a tattoo you have to ask yourself: Why do I want one? if your answer is " I don't know" or " cuz it's cool" or " cuz my friends all have them" then you have to really re-think the whole thing. I have lots of tattoos(100+) and the oldest ones are about 30 years old. I had to go for an MRI not to long ago as was asked about what types of pigments were used in my tattoos. I had no clue. Reason for asking that question was they may heat up and burn me. But I took the chance anyway and was alright.

I have two tats, and my first one was my own design that was put on my ankle.

As this is in memory of your daughter (and sorry for your loss) my advice would be to make it totally unique so it means that extra something and you won't see it on someone else in the street (like you will if it is out of the book). call the place you are going and ask them if you can take your own design. Mine was a circular patter i doodle / draw, when i am bored or on the phone, i have always drawn it so i knew somewhere in my mind it means something to me.

As regards to pain, i would not say it is painful. I found it to be an irritation like a fly on your skin. As you are having this on your back the only thing that will cause you sitress is staying still for a while to have it done. After this one I promise you, you will want more.

A simple design whether it is a name or a picture should be drawn by you. Do not be afraid to choose different colours, my patter on my ankle is in brown rather than the boring old black.
Good luck and i bet it is going to look fab!

I got my first tattoo when I was 17 on my lower back. The lower back is the worst place to get you first tattoo. I was tough though. Take someone with you that can talk to you so that your focus is off of the pain. When it is over you will be like, "I can do that again."

About the type of tattoo to get. Make sure that has a special meaning. When I got all 5 of my tattoos the thing that I thought about is where its going is going to be easy to cover up in a professional workplace, will I regret it when I am 65 yrs old, what about me does it symbolize, and will it be appropriate enough for my children to see and ask about without being embarrassed???

I see many people get vulgar tattoos and later want to get it removed or covered up because they say that they are not that type of person anymore. It is permanent and momentarily painful. Keep that in mind. But I will say, after having my tattoos for over 7 years, I have not regret any of mine and you can never tell that I have one unless I have on a bathing suit or is in the nude. Keeping it hidden makes it extra sexy.

Good luck.

Yes they have a cream they will apply after they do the outlining but you have to inquire before they start because not all tattooist have or use it. My daughter used it when she got her back piece done because it was on her spine. My own experience I've never used anything for mine and I have 10+ on different parts of my body. I gave birth to some big babies and survived it so I a tat isn't anything - my opinion here. The closer to the bone the more pain you'll experience. The cream won't take all the pain away but it will make it more tolerable for you. Don't drink any alcohol prior to appointment. Also, don't syc yourself up because it will make you tense & also effects the pain threshold.

Good luck.

I personally have never heard of numbing before a tattoo. I have about 6, including one on my lower back. The anticipation is the worst. The lower back doesnt hurt compared to the hip, now that hurt something bad! Neway just do it, after you get that one, you will probably want another. Its gonna hurt, i mean its a bunch of little needles being stuck into your skin, but the pain just goes away, its really not that bad.

I think pain tolerance varies from person to person. I have never heard of them numbing the area but if they can great. However, remember this, It depends how big the tattoo is and where exactly it is located but you can not, CAN NOT, get an epidural for pain because the tattoo blocks the visual site for insertion of the needle. And trust me when you have a baby, this is the most vital drug control you can get. I am not kidding from experience. Good Luck and whatever you choose think about it for a good couple of months before you get it.

Hi I don't have any tattoos myself yet but plan on getting my kids' names done in chinese characters on one of my feet a Christmas present to my self. What you describe sounds immensly special so get it right If I was in your position I would not use numbing creams as I have heard that they can interfere with the process. My sister has a number of tatts on her shoulder back and lower leg/foot and she said the worst was the out line then things kind of go numb after/during. Panadol or similar can take the edge off after I wouldn't use asprin as it thins the blood. Hope thishelps and good luck!

honestly the pain level depends on how tolerant one is. also, certain parts of the body are more sensitive than other places. i heard that the lower back is a bad place to get a tat because the pain takes longer to go away... however i have a tat on my back and it doesnt hurt at all. im sorry about your child. i have two, and it would kill me if i lost one.

Wow first let me say how sorry I am to hear you lost a child I can't even imagine what your going through. I have several tats and I slept through all of them. It's different for everyone however my tat guy told me to eat a good meal of carbs before hand cause you can get dizzy and carbs help. take something to read or listen to because if you can do something that will take your mind off of it, it will hurt less. And most important relax it's really not as scary as people say.Good luck.
