my scanner and lcd monitor have broken adaptors. i need to buy replacements but i am not sure what should i know aside from the voltage the devices need.

You need the same voltage and equal or greater than amperes from the adapter. The device will only take the amperes it needs, so if you have more, there shouldn't be a problem. Beware that some adapters require a minimum number of amperes do be used by the attached device to operate correctly, but if you get an adapter that is close in ratings to the original, it will probably be fine.

You will have problems if either the voltage or the amperes are lower than the original adapter.

Lower ampere rating slows down your device and vice versa.
Every component of the device has its voltage and current rating to function properly.
Two options: one, you can buy a replacement but the voltage and ampere rating should be within the range specified by your device, two you can create your own power supply and achieve the desired values by computing the proper values of the resistors and capacitors in the circuit.

You can have good results outside of that percentage and usually current is drawn from the maximum total. With a laptop it's usually OK. Some electronics are built around the power supply's total wattage, some are just based on voltage. it all depends. Your only option is to try it.
