Tail docking is still permitted in the United States, but a number veterinarians no longer perform this surgery. It's not because of a legal restriction; moreso it's an ethical choice. Veterinarians who do not dock tails and crop ears say that the procedure is entirely asthetic and serves no purpose to the dog. As a result, they feel it's unethical to force the dog to experience the pain and post-operative healing that accompany these surgies. Many of these veterinarians will also elect not to provide feline declaw options to clients who are interested in doing so.
The problem is that many AKC registered breeds have to be docked and cropped to show; as long as the breed standard calls for these procedures, someone somewhere will do them. Tails are usually docked before the puppies are three days old, when there's not a lot of nerve or bone development. Ear cropping is done months down the line. If you're searching for a doctor to perfoms these procedures, your odds are better looking for doctors who're not recent grads; most of the dockers and croppers are the "old school" veterinarians who're less concerned with the asthetic nature of the surgery.

You can still get dogs docked in the UK.
Its been illegal for owners/breeders to do it for years however it is still legal to be done if done by a vet,its hard to find a vet that will do it but if you join the council for docked breeds they will give you details of vets that still do it.

Tail docking is still legal here in the US and they are not trying to ban it that I know of.
Many vets no longer do ear crops but most will dock tails.

Tail docking is still legal in the USA. It must be done by the time the puppy is 3 days old.
*****I know you didn't ask about ear cropping but it is along the same lines of cosmetic surgery********As for ear cropping it must be done between 6 weeks and 16 weeks. It can't be done after that.
A dog of any breed no longer needs to have their ears cropped in order to be shown. In many breeds it has been optional for years now and in others it only became an option in the past few years. The AVMA & the AAHA don' endorse ear cropping and vets are not taught ear cropping in vet school. Many vets no longer perform this service.

Assuming you are talking about dogs. Vets have been refusing to dock tails of dogs for several years, some breeders have been doing it themselves. It's a pointless thing, and only causes distress to the dog.

Sounds like some of the dog people on here need to wake up and smell the anti-dog laws!
They ARE trying to make it illegal in NY state!
Amazingly, the AKC DID manage to crawl out of the bed it is sharing with HSUS and the like to speak out about it. THANKS AKC, for ignoring the gazillion OTHER anti-dog laws we are fighting every day!!!
Oh for crying out loud people! Have you EVER seen a painful, bloody, broken tail that needed to be docked as an adult? Many breeds are docked for a reason! That is the problem, people speaking about things for which they know nothing about!!!

I joined the council for docked breeds when I needed to get my litters done, they supplied a vet, all was very quick and clean, the pups had no bleeding afterwards and were none the worse for it.

It is not banned in the US. More and more vets, however, will not crop ears on a dog. It is illegal in Europe and considered cruelty.
