You should be able to do it in a weekend. Start with the ceiling. Next cut in the top of the walls and the corners of the room with a paintbrush. Paint at least a 4 inch strip at the top of the wall so that you will be able to paint up to and overlapping this strip with the roller without letting the roller touch the ceiling. This is the tedious, time-consuming part. Go slow at the top and be careful not to get paint on the ceiling. Then paint the remaining part of the walls. The rest of your question is going to depend on what color the walls are now and what color you are painting them. By strong color, I assume you mean either dark or bright. If this is the case, it will take at least two coats if painted over white walls. The more drastic the color change, the more coats it will take. If the color you are using is not close to white, it will do you no good to paint a coat of white first. You could paint a coat of the same color or a very similar color using flat paint first - it is generally cheaper than other finishes. It the rooms are for small kids, you will probably want the finished walls to be a washable as possible in case of crayon marks, etc. Semi-gloss is more washable, and the most washable is paint specifically marked "kitchen and bath" paint. It is a very thick semi-gloss that can take a lot of moisture. I've had the best luck with American Tradition brand sold at Lowes. We used one of Sherwin Williams' better semi-gloss varieties in the kids playroom - first time we used this - and it looks like flat (no sheen at all) and comes off the wall when wiped with a damp cloth. Since it was more than twice the price of American Heritage, we were very dissapointed. Since it had a 15 year warranty on it, we called them about it, but after fowarding us to 20 different people, they decided we must have applied it wrong and did nothing. They refused to even come out and look at it to verify it had been applied correctly.

The first answer is good advice. Have some bright light also, sometimes the under coat may show through, especially on a rough ceiling. The bright lights help you see this and know if you need an additional coat. Have drop cloths all over. You can roll the ceiling and walls, but, it will throw off a fine spray on everything. I usually do trim around doors and windows first. about two inches around trim I do the same color as what my walls and ceiling be then paint the main parts, if, you understand. But, most any approach will work.

paint the ceilings white even if you paint the walls a color because it makes the room look bigger. I saw where someone hung a big round ring over the bed and hung nice sheer fabric from it to make a net like thing it was cool and I bet a kid would love it. also stencils around the top of the ceiling looks kinda cool./

You have got the order right ceilings, walls then skirting boards.
To cover a strong colour I buy a cheap tin of matt it covers a lot better than silk.
