I would like to lose about 50 lbs. I have lost a lot of weight before, but cannot seem to get myself into the weight loss frame of mind. I dont feel like living on fruits and veggies thru the holiday season, but I need to get this weight off before I go see the doctor in May of next year. I dont want to use weight watchers or go on one of those diets where you order your food and it comes by UPS or whoever. I just want a simple diet plan. I am 5'10" tall and weigh in at about 250.

Starving yourself is the wrong answer. By starving yourself, your metabolism will shut down, causing you to store all sugars, carbohydrates, and fats as fat. Yes, you will gain more weight when you start eating again, even if you eat the right things and exercise.

The best suggestion in this case is portion control and exercise. Rather than eating larger portions at the regular meals, eat smaller portions 5 to 6 times a day. Snack on vegetables and healthy snacks. Keep your protien intake up, and altenate each day in the other group to eat: carbohydrates, fats and sugars. This way your metabolism stays active and you don't get the cravings that might by dropping out the other categories.

By using this and including regular exercise each day, normally 30 minutes of cardio is recommended for beginners, you will lose weight as quickly as is safely possible.

A little here, a little there. Cutting calories is easier than you think! Think small! Trimming even just a small percentage of your body weight can do wonders for your health. And eating just a bit less is the way to do it. Shaving calories here and there is easier than you think. All it takes are a few no-sweat efforts like the ones that follow. Pick two a day and you'll cut 100 calories. Burn 100 more calories a day (a 15- to 20-minute walk will do the trick) and you'll lose almost half a pound a week. That may not sound like much, but it adds up to 20 pounds a year!

1. Leave the cheese off your sandwich.
2. Use 1 cup skim milk instead of 1 cup whole milk.
3. Use a nonstick spray instead of 2 teaspoons oil.
4. Drink seltzer or diet soda instead of regular soda.
5. Have an English muffin instead of a doughnut
6. Use 1 tablespoon light mayonnaise instead of 1 tablespoon regular mayo.
7. Eat 2 tablespoons less ice cream.
8. Drink 4 ounces less juice.
9. Use 1 tablespoon less cream cheese.
10. Order small fries instead of large fries.
11. Use 1 tablespoon less salad dressing.
12. Use one less pat of margarine
13. Substitute 4 ounces ground turkey for 4 ounces ground beef.
14. Have 1 ounce of pretzels instead of 1 ounce of potato chips.
15. Substitute 1 tablespoon jam for 1 tablespoon butter.

Cutting calories worked for me, although it's all I really tried. Worked very well though. For my diet I ate about 700 calories a day, a cup of cheerios in the morning, and a Lean Cuisine Frozen Dinner for lunch and a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner for dinner. I lost 30 lbs and about 2 months. Still I wouldn't recommend it because it wasn't very healthy, I was having about half the calories I was supposed to have, but you could do something like that just some more calories.

Okay, forget about all the crap you here. This is tried and tested and you will see a massive difference in just one month!!!!!!!!

Okay, cut out junk food - None
replace with low fat yogurts, protein bars.

Dont drink milk, drink mineral water.

Eat fruit,

If you want to excellerate the process then work out, but you really dont have too.

Dont think about eating set meals. Life aint that easy, if you never stop eating (i.e. snack every 30mins) this will keep you trim.

As this will keep you metabolism working over, and gradually increase, which will reduce your weight. If you starve yourself your gut will simply just blotter up and you will end up eat more, resulting in a full gut and a slower metabolism.

I have been told all this by my gym instructor and I have lost so much weight in the last 4 months.

Eat chicken, brown bread, fish, vegetables, protein bars (for when you have to miss a meal), fruit, low fat yougurts, cereal bars (low sugar one)

The more water you dring the less hungry you will be.

Hope this helps...

"Best" depends on the person.

Person #1 might want to still be able to eat their favorite foods and doesn't care if they only lose 1 pound a week. They should try Weight Watchers.

Person #2 doesn't want to plan or cook anything and doesn't care if they only lose 1-2 pounds a week. They should try Nutrisystem (if they can afford $400 a month).

Person #3 just wants the weight off fast. They don't care if they have to give up their favorite foods for a few months if they can lose 4-8 lb a week. They should try Kimkins.

Person #4 doesn't want a "diet". They want to figure it out on their own and pick from different diets and add exercise. This is iffy because few people understand the delicate balance of carbs & calories and buy into eating more due to exercise. No advice except learn from experience.

I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.

It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.

Stay motivated, and get up and walk every day. I seriously lost all my weight starting off my day on my walk.

Good LUCK!

The BEST way to lose weight is to eat healthy. If you eat lots of fresh veggies, fruits (which most diets don't allow), nuts, fish and chicken, use olive oil instead of butter or vegetable oil, and reduce carbs to whole grains only, you will lose an amazing amount of weight safely, you will feel better, have more energy and even your hair and skin will improve.

If you are serious about losing weight, the calories
in the food you eat should be less than the
energy you use. You will have to increase your
metabolic rate now, and plan your diet carefully.
Formulate your own weight loss plan and you will
lose weight faster. More details available at

What works for me is just portion control. You could get lean cusines at the store if you dont know what a portion should be. I also don't think about food as food. I see it as how much excersice I am going to have to do. For example, that is not a McGriddle you see, thats an hour of push up and sit ups. That is not steak and sweet potato, that is a 6.5 mile run.

Set your self a medium range target and don't try to lose weight drastically.

Start exercising every day - you will need 30 minutes of cardio vascular activity each day - jogging, fast walking or cycling.

Try the scarsdale diet - it's real food and you don't need to go hungry.

Cut out booze, sugar and fats.
