The way of greeting people in French can change with the situation.
If you are in front of a stranger or a person which you have to show a sign of respect you say "Bonjour" in the morning and "Bonsoir" in the evening.
To greet a friend, a close person like your family or younger people you say "Salut".
To respond to a phone call you say "Allo". Even if the way of greeting doesn`t changes, native French speakers like me know that we normally say "Oui, allo" if we have for example an administration position in an office because it sounds nicer.

Bonjour is formal for strangers or people you would show respect to. Salut is for friends and family. Allo is to answer the phone and is for friends and family.

All of the above are correct, but you would use "bonsoir" instead of Bonjour in the evening. Also, Salut and Allo are very informal and should be used with friends and family only.

Bonjour is more formal than salut, so when you say hi to your friends say salut, when you say hi to strangers bonjour : )
