The occipital nerve is a spinal nerve between the second and third cervical vertebrae. It innervates the scalp at the top of the head, over the ear, and over the paratoid glands,(salivary glands). Disorders of this nerve will cause headaches.

Occulomotor Nerve for Eye. Occipital Lobe is the brain part that controls it and the nerve of that tract is the Occipital Nerve.

There are strictly speaking three occipital nerves (major, minor and tertiary).They are small nerves innervating mostly the skin (=sensory) in upper neck and back part of head (=occiput) they start mostly from the 2nd and 3rd cervical nerves and have some innervation of the upper neck muscles(motor part) also .(See:Feneis, Anatomisches bildwörterbuch(=anatomical picture dictionary)).
