It's a military award...

It's a medal for sailors and Marines who do their jobs in a particularly exemplary manner. If you just do your job well, you get your paycheck. If you do it really well, you may get some sort of certificate from the command, or be names Sailor/Marine of the Quarter for your unit. You have to really stand out to get a Navy Achievement Medal (NAM), though, especially in the Marine Corps.

It's recipients are 'usually' mid-grade enlisted (E-5 and above) and junior officers (O-1 to O-3). The next higher medal for how well you do your job is the Navy/Marine Corps Commandation Medal (a 'COM'), which is harder to get.

These are normally different from medals earned for a single heroic action, such as a bronze or silver star, but there are always exceptions-- a member of the military can get a NAM or a COM for a single (and pretty spectacular) action, but it's more rare. Usually the medal is awarded at the end of a tour, and characterizes the entire tour.
