The safest way would be going to the salon and asking for a toning treatment - they do the processing there. They usually use a purple or blue colored toner - don't worry, it doesn't turn your hair purple or blue unless your hair is bleach blonde - and I mean white. Purple and Blue will neutralize the brassiness in your hair. This process is pretty inexpensive. Afterwards, ask if they have any Blue Malva shampoo - I think Aveda carries it. This will also help alot. Good luck!
If your hair is red or orange - this may not work, and you may want to think about redying it a neutral brown in a day or two first. Don't wash your hair until after you redye it. You don't want to dry it out. When your hair looks closer to a light/Medium brown - then go get highlights after about a week. Because of the triple processing - your hair may need a trim and you aren't going to want to do a lot of hot styling for a while. This is very hard on you hair. I suggest using a very heavy cream conditioner once a week and a light leave in conditioner everyday for at least a month.

Get some of that red-gold corrector from Sally Beauty Supply or another beauty warehouse. You might need to ask for it.

If it is especially bad, you can tone it down with an ash blonde of the same or similar color.
