I guess you could use dawn on your hair as a one time thing, I wouldn't want to use it very often. I love it for dishes though, only thing I use. :) What is fairy liquid?

I have been a hairdresser for 13 years and have never heard of Fairy Liquid...but I can tell you that it is ok for you to try and wash your hair with Dawn. I would use a dish soap you could see through like Palmolive if you are looking for some fading effects to the hair.
Remember, dish soaps are de-greasers. So make sure you follow up with good conditioner.
Also, dish soap is hard to rinse out. If you plan on washing it more than once don't freak if you can't get it all out. Just wash, rinse as much as you can. Then when you are ready for it to be all out take a small amount of conditioner and run it through your hair and rinse. Then squeeze out the remaining water (or towel dry) and put a deep conditioner in.
Good luck with fading the color! I hope it isn't a very dark color.

RE:
Dawn dish soap = fairy liquid??
Is 'Dawn dish soap' the same thing as Fairy Liquid, and is it ok to wash hair with it to lessen the effects of hair dye?

I don't know what 'dawn dish soap' is. Buy a deep cleansing or anti-dandruff shampoo and use it regular to help remove the hair dye from your hair.
(the cheap shampoos work best for this as the tend to be harsher than the more expensive ones.)

Dawn is really for over greasy hair. This a one time use. Just say you added a lot of oil to your hair and regular shampoos will not remove the oil, so you would use Dawn. Then you will have to really conditioner your hair afterwards.

They are both dish detergent. Yes,it will help in fading hair color, some times it fades it allot and some times it doesn't,depends on what color you have on your hair, like if you dyed your hair black, chances are it will not fade it at all. If you use the dish soap, make sure to use conditoner.

I wash my hair with Dawn from time to time, it hasn't damaged it. The hair dye, depending on what you have in your hair, will start to lighten up after a few washings. I usually see color in the hair shampoo (regardless of the brand) for several days after I dye my hair.
