My father who is 55 years old woke up the other day with an internal swollen cheek - the night before he drank old wine which he normally goes to my mother's bedroom and finds them and he thinks thats what has caused it. But yesterday and today it's gotten worse and now his right hand cant hold on to things as good as he could and his mouth is to the side slightly, he can't walk as good either - he is kind of limping or dragging himself as you would say, with his right hand he holds on to stuff and sometimes drops them by mistake. I'm getting quite worried about this now as I am 16 years old and everyone tells him to go to the doctor but he won't. So I don't know what to do, people think its Abscess but if there is someone out there that could help me then please answer. Thanks

Okay hun, I am a registered RN and you HAVE TO GET HIM TO THE ER AND I MEAN NOW! I think your dad has had a minor stroke. From all the symptoms you gave me that is the diagnoses. If not taken care of well...it could get worse and he might not get his side functions back or could have another one and not make it. I don't want to scare you but this is very serious. If he will not go then just take the phone outside and call an ambulance. You have to do what is best for him and I promise he will not hate you for it...just help him. I hope I am wrong(hard to just go by words without seeing him) but you have got to do something now. Good Luck Sweetheart and be STRONG for him!

The symptoms you're describing don't relate to an abscess. This sounds more neurological .. actually it sounds very similar to a mild stroke. During the initial onset he could have bitten the inside of his mouth that would account for the swollen cheek. If your father doesn't go to the doctor and it is a stroke the damage can become permanent. He has to go and go now.
I hope it isn't. Good luck.

I was wondering do you have any other family around you could speak too? there definatly seems to be a problem with your father almost as if he has has a small stroke. If he refuses to seek medical care Im hoping somebody can help you convince him he needs it, if the symptoms contnue to worsen you could call 911 and let them decide whats best for him I hope it works out for you and I hope you have some support your too young to have to be so worried My best wishes to you

You have my sympathy. Men tend to resist seeing their doctors -- often until it's too late. Your father needs to go to his doctor YESTERDAY!! This does indeed sound like it could have been a stroke. The sooner it is seen to the better the chances of recovery are. Get him to a doctor or hospital without delay.
