I am building a toybox right now. I'm using 3/4 oak plywood (so it will match some other furniture in the room). I am banding all of the edges with 3/4 square oak so no plywood edges will be exposed. I am concerned about splinters from the plywood being a hazard. You need to think about this if you use plywood.

1/2" plywood would be okay but it tends to warp or bow more that 3/4" . You might also consider using 5/8" or 3/4" MDF. It doesn't have any splinters and tends to be much more stable than plywood. It can also be cheaper. You could use glued rabbited corner joints reinforced inside with 3/4" glued square stock. MDF paints really well if you give it a good primer coat first and a complete sanding of the edges which tend to soak up a lot of paint.

You also need to think about the top and how to keep it from being a potential hazard. There are various types of stops to keep the lid open. I personally decided to avoid the problem by fixing the top and having two hinged doors on the front.

Using material like 1 x 10's or 1x12's is a good idea if you can find pieces that aren't full of knots, twisted, cupped or otherwise difficult to work with. Even some poor quality lumber can be pretty costly when compared with plywood or MDF.

instead of plywood, why not use 1'x10's? it will be cheaper and you can paint or stain the box with much better results. 2x2's for inside corners will work good.
