Teenage boy with limited funds ($5,000 - $6500). Living in New England I would think a 4x4 would be better in the winter. I would also think a quad cab would provide more protection in case of an accident, but I could be wrong. What are thegood and the bad about owning a small to mid size pick up?

A 4x4 p/u is the perfect vehicle for a teen boy in New England.

You probably won't get a Toyota with that budget, but you should be able to find a nice Ranger for that kind of money.

I'd avoid the quad cab tho, because it'll only encourage him to bring his friends with him, and the stats show that teen drivers are 10x more likely to wreck with passengers than w/o. Maybe just an extra cab tho, the extra room is nice.

Pros:
- it's a truck, and they are extremely usefull.
- 4x4 means he's not as likely to need a tow truck to get him out of spots, and more likely to not run off the road when he doesn't want to
- no matter how crappy the truck, it's still a LOT cooler than any of the Korean crap you could get at the same price
- They are generally safer when smashing into other objects

Cons:
- Gas milage isn't as great
- More chance of rollover than a sedan, but loads less likely than an SUV
- You'll have to go fairly old and have a quite a few miles to get a 4x4 in that price range. (at least in Florida, you probably have a lot more 4x4's up there than there are down here, so I could be off)

For reliability you must ordinarily opt for a Toyota. They make a well truck. You'll pay extra for it. But the deal you get on an different chevy, ford, or ward off could no longer subject such a lot if the matters craps out on you in a yr. My brother-in-regulation simply went via precisely that. Even so, it should be stated that surely you are going to pay much less for a kind of American vans. Is it valued at it? Probably no longer.

the smaller the truck, the less protection in an accident. Any truck for about $5000 is going to be the same and run about the same, get a full size if you want safety

in that price range i would look for an older well kept Toyota. the dependability is good, and the operational cost should be good also. get a carfax on the unit to ensure its history. i would look in the local paper for a private party, preferably one owner truck. good luck

Get a toyota. Good quality, and good crash ratings.
