most cocktails need ice to make them appealing. the part where they need attention is when you drink them, otherwise they get all watered down from the ice melting.

I guess you mean cockatiel although I see the spell check throws up cocktail. They do not need as much attention as a larger parrot such as grey, cockatoo or macaw. They do however need attention. They are considered low maintenance members of the parrot family because they can amuse themselves when provided with toys, they dont destroy things they way the larger parrots do, including the self destruction that a larger parrot will do if he does not have enough attention. Much attention is really comparative statement. A pet snake does not require much attention, yet a cockatiel will require very much more than a snake.

Maybe the book means they need less attention than birds like macaws for example. My step-mums cockatiel doesnt have much contact but is in the kitchen where people are in and out all day and he seems happy enough. My hahns macaw needs to come out several times a day and have a lot of stimulation otherwise he gets very bored and starts to feather pluck.

Hi

I think you are right - all birds need attention. I am sure that like most pet birds, the more attention you give cockatiels - the more you get back from them.

Everything I know about birds thro experience and from reading suggests that they do need a lot of attention.

In summary, I think you are right and your book is wrong. It would be worth surfing around to verify other knowledge regarding cockatiel care.

Some interesting sites (in my opinion).

I would have to say you are smarter than the book... all birds need attention - unless they are housed in a large aviary with other birds, which most pets are not
typically pet birds are housed in cages way too small for their mental needs and require a good big of attention....

Cockatiels do need attention. I have 4 of the darlings. They aren't as demanding as some of the larger parrots and they can be shy. But once they've gotten used to you, they love to cuddle and have their heads scratched. If you're looking for a good book on cockatiels, try Cockatiels for Dummies by Diane Grindol. A very basic book on caring for 'tiels.

No, what you read is not true i own 3 cockatiels and if I dont take them out morning and night they skwawk and dance till i let them out! You may not need to let it out morning and night but at least at night. Cockatiels need alot of attention.

Birds are flock animals. If you keep one singly then you become their flock. If you keep more than one then they do not need as much interaction with you.
Cockatiels are easy keepers as they do not need a huge cage, are not as noisy as many other birds and have pretty simple dietary needs.

Try www.wikipedia.org, its a website that tells you about anything you type in. This is how I learn about this breed of cat I want. Try in cocktails and see what it says.

Good Luck,
