It depends on the number of pack years the person has been smoking. A pack year is defined as an entire year in which a person smokes a pack of cigarettes per day. For example, a person who smokes a pack per day for two years has two pack years of smoking history. This is equal to a person who smokes half a pack for four years; and to one who smokes two packs per day for a year. Generally, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD: chronic bronchitis and emphysema), which is the more common cause of death in smokers occurs at around 20 pack years.
To compute for your current pack year, divide the number of sticks you smoke in a day by 20. Then multiply this by the number of years you have been smoking. Example, if I have been smoking for 10 years averaging 15 sticks per day, that's (15sticks/20sticks)x10years = 7.5 pack years.

There is no answer for that one because there are always those who beats the odds. It is determined by genetics, luck, when you started and when you stopped.
If you address a higher power that is also a consideration. The odds go down but I have heard of rare cases where it did not seem to sway the end results. Best bet is don't do it. You could have a car accident at 26 and report you smoked until the day you were no longer eligible as a statistic.
