I'm Japanese and would like to provide you with some "correct" information about Japan.

SoccerLover: Most Japanese have cars.

Kate and Masíl: Most Japanese eat 3 meals a day.

QueenOfSecrets: Most Japanese neither eat small meals every 3-5 hours nor exercise often. I do not think our jobs are very rough compared to ones in other countries. As for doing chores, it depends on the person. I do it very fast, though.

Linda: Most Japanese do not drink water all the time with our meals but teas (green, black, oolong, etc.) without sugar or milk.

Maximus: I do not think the Japanese have a very active lifestyle compared to people in other developed countries.

Why are most Japanese thin then? It's nature and nurture. In other words, genetics and diet. We eat less fatty and a much smaller portion of food than the American. Also, it is scientifically proved that our esophagus and stomach aren't as strong as the Westerner's. Thus, we are genetically programed to eat moderately.

As Linda pointed out, young people these days do not cook but eat McDonald's type fast food. However, overall, our diets are still healthier than the American's.

Genetics, plain and simple. It has little to do with their diets. Asian people in general are "thin" by most standards...regardless of where they live.

Just look at the Asian population in any country. Regardless of where they were born, even Asians living in Western countries, eating a largely Western diet, are still, on average, significantly thinner than the general population. There are exceptions to the rule within every ethnicity, such as Japanese Sumo wrestlers, but they are statistically outside the norm.

it might be part of their genetics.. but then remember sumo wrestlers.. but those who live in japan.. most don't have cars so they walk or ride bikes i think to go almost anywhere. If I had to give up a fork and use chopsticks, I think that I would loose some serious weight!

They eat 4 meals a day. So there metabolism is higher, and their want for food is pretty much eliminated, because they don't get hungry. They also eat smaller portions for their meals, and stop eating when they are full. If we did that, we would shed some pounds, too

The Japanese have a very active lifestyle and they walk almost everywhere they go, they also don't have the regualr diets filled with fatty foods that we do in the United States.

It is their diet mostly but that is changing with the new generation of Japanese kids who are eating fast food and everything we eat here in the states.

If you eat fish, rice and vegetables all the time as opposed to fast food, it is inevitable that you will stay leaner. Plus they drink water all the time with their meal and not soda or a drink that contains sugar.

Rice, Fish, oriental vegetables, in small portions. Japanese people generally have a longer life span than any other race because of their controlled eating.

The favourite Japanese food is fish! All fish, any fish, lots of fish, especially raw fish! How can you put on weight with a diet like that?

Their ancestors ate rice and fish for centuries. If you ate only rice and fish for the rest of your days, I'm sure you'd thin out a bit too.

That actually sounds good right now...mm...
