It's not totally safe everywhere. Maybe in the downtowns of big cities, but yesterday here two Muslim women were acousted in Afghanistan for not wearing veils and were hit with clubs by officials of that country wearing uniforms, despite a law that let's them not wear a veil and THIS WAS REPORTED BY MUSLIM WOMEN WHO WHERE THERE.

You will find that one here on Y/A, go check out the source of the question and see if it was reported accurately by Muslims!

The Guardian, an English Newspaper, reported how some women in parts of Iraq were hounded by men and told to wear a veil and told NOT to drive their own cars and told NOT to use cell phones in public.

Islamics tell me this is a tribal thing, not and Islamic thing.

SO, be careful where you go and make sure you have male escourts when going into strange areas.

I think it would be best if you were to specify these 'religious areas' you are talking about so people can really inform you of the situation there.

Maybe a simple scarf would do (you could show your hair a little if you wanted). If you are going to visit some holy sites I think it would be better for you to wear a hijab that covers all your hair. I wear the hijab out of respect when I visit holy sites and also to prevent unwanted attention especially if most of the women there are wearing hijab.

*edit*
In Saudi you have to cover up and wear the hijab. Yeah it is strict over there. Iran... I've seen photos of girls in Iran, and they're wearing bright colourful scarves while showing a little bit of hair, so perhaps it's less strict now?

Don't be worried, if you are travelling with a man you should be safe.

Big surprise for you not all Muslim women wear hijabs even in Muslim countries. If you are an Arab, why would you not know that? Your not considered dirty or easy...why would you be. There are people of other faiths who live and work in Arab countries who have never in their lives worn a hijab. I arrived in Alger's airport not all of the women who worked there wore hijabs and neither did the air stewards on the plane to Tunis. Or half the women working and walking around Tunis. You will have no trouble at all. Why would you.

I'm an Iranian.well if you want to come here you should wear a hijab because we are an Islamic country and it's the law of our country to were a scarf but it doesn't matter if you were only a small one. the only important thing is that you should obey the law. But I have seen that in other islamic countries peolpe may were hijab or not:it's not important for the goverment.

In Iran you must cover because it's mandated by law, however you will see the ladies showing their bangs and everything. :) In Saudi even the soldier American women that leave the compound have put on a scarf and abaya now I think - or at least cover their hair. They made that ruling not long ago.

Just throw on a scarf and get on with your business. No biggie.

In most muslim countries, you will be beaten if you do that. And by that I mean, jackboot wearing psychopaths will surround you as you walk down the street and beat you with sticks. You will probably be gang raped (muslim clerics specifically and repeatedly announce that women without a hijab are asking for it and are responsible for it). If you get the police involved (if they aren't the attackers, lol), YOU will likely be the one charged with a crime. For example, if you are in Iran, and you are raped, you will be executed by stoning or hanging for having sex outside of marriage (as is done every day in that country).

I would say, wear the hijab because your life depends on it but that would be irresponsible.

Stay out of those countries, period. Nothing but crazy people there who want to hurt you.

In Iran you would get executed if you don't wear a hijab. If you're a christian, you still have to wear Hijab in a strict muslim country like Iran.

I have friends who lived in Iran after the Revoltion, they are not Muslims, yet they were forced to wear Chaddors when they left their homes.

Another non Muslim friend, who was in Bahrain to live, always wore a Burka when going out. Tho, I think the restrictions have eased there.

It depends on what areas you will be in.
