I know recipes call for dry powdered milk to thicken up yogurt but I'm wondering if it would be ok to substitute dry buttermilk powder instead?
Any one ever try this or have an opinion?

powdered milks are not really classified as thickeners but, for your use, it will do the trick. among the powdered milks, buttermilk and wholemilk powders are better than skimmilk powder because they are creamier.
