I am an art student and am looking for an automatic mechanism that I can put on a timer and that I can use to stamp card into these jig saw pieces. Thanks!

Traditionally a jigsaw (hence the name) - I think you are right in that modern jigsaw puzzle makers use a press; but I don't think they can bought for DIY, I think they're probably specialist kit and very expensive (or they could be modifications of existing specialist kit). If you want to make your own jig saw puzzle, I think you may need to use a jigsaw. Good luck!

Yes long time ago the were and som now were
cut with jigsaw as they were all made of wood but i think every one is missing your point you mention card.
This is done by a press, its is on the Principal of pressing out on
shapes out on pastry.
I assume that a big cylinder is fitted with with the pattern,in
metal,on the out side and the card lade flat so the metal cylinder, it is
rotated thus pressing on the card and produces the finished
product.
I agree that wood jigsaws are still produced with jigsaw.
