I've made a point of not going to lots of tourist places, but the best museum in Beijing I've seen is the Capital Museum. It is first class! It has an excellent section on Calligraphy, and it has many different displays including models of people doing various tasks. If you like museums, this is one you should visit.
Sadly, I must recommend you avoid the National Museum. It wasn't up to the standard I would have expected for a National Museum. When I went there the two biggest displays were on the Mexican Inca's, true, it filled about 3/4 of the ground floor, and on Buddhist statues, which filled most of the other quarter on the ground floor. The building looked like it hadn't been maintained properly. Also avoid the artist who reckons he can paint with two hands at once. I just hope the President pays them a surprise visit.
I went to the Palace Museum, alias the Forbidden City, and I found this difficult. It is very large and takes more than a day to visit it. It must truly have been magnificent in it's heyday. You can see some parts which reflect this, but a lot of it has suffered from pollution and improper maintenance. They have started to restore some parts, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
