Since a fax machine works on the same priniciple as a scanner is there some way of attaching it to the computer so that the computer can receive the document. I realize this can be done if there are two phone lines but I would like to know if the fax machine can be connected directly to a computer and be used as a scanner

I'm afraid that the feature that you want to make work won't happen.
Reasons:
1) You may connect a Scanner to computer using USB or Parallel Cable.
2) You need the necessary Microchip./PCB (Printed Control Board) for the Fax machine to convert the info in to digital format and transfer to computer.
3) Even if you are able to connect it some how, you need a DRIVER for the scanner to work.

Better to buy a Scanner rather than spoiling your Fax machine.
