1 megapixels = one milion pixels = a matrix of 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels is a one megapixel digital camera sensor.

Now comes the trick ...a pixel is just one color pixel and you need at least 3 pixels Red, Green, Blue, mixed toghether to have a one full color dot (3 pixels). That why when they advertise a camera...they like to say how many megapixels and not how many full color dots you will have as a result (hard copy photo) from that camera ... So if you take a 3 Megapixels digital camera = 1 mega full color dots = 1000x1000 full color dots photo ..which is likely to be printed at 300dpi (dots per inches) = 3.3 x 3.3 inches paper size ....a very small photo ...ROTFL. not even a 4x6.

Note that a 1 megapixels is not the same with one mega bytes ! Pixels are real small dots on your digital camera sensor, display or paper NOT bits of binary information. One mega byte is 1024 bytes x 1024 bytes. where 1 bytes is 8 bit.

The answer isn't obvious, unless you have been formally introduced to the binary number system.

With regards to computers, everything has a base of 2, because that is how computers communicate - everything is either on (1) or off (0).

1 pixel = 1 pixel. (= 2^0 = 0001)
1k pixels = 1024 pixels (= 2^10 = 0100 0000 0000)
1M pixels = 1024 x 1024 pixels = 1048576 pixels (= 2^20 = 0001 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000)

So, the answer to your question is: 1,048,576 pixels in a Mega pixel.

There are 1,000,000 pixels in a mega pixel

The more mega pixels your camera the sharper the image will be. e.g. excellent picture quality.
