My boyfriend has dental pain stemming from the nerves in his gums. We have tried anbesol, clove oil, salt water rinse, we took him to the dentist and got antibiotics and pain medication, dentist says he needs a root canal but we cannot afford a root canal and we don't have dental insurance. Does anyone know anything else that will hold the pain off (that we can buy over the counter) till we can get the money for his dental work?

this is going to sound silly but rinse your mouth with vodka. it will burn for a minute but it will work for days afterward. you dont drink the vodka so you can buy the cheap stuff. a half pint bottle will last for months. my husband had the same problem and was amazed that this really worked. he was skeptical as he is a non drinker. you may also want to check with your local health department they will tell you where you can get dental work done based on your income.

Ask you boyfriends dentist to perform a procedure called a "Pulpectomy". This procedure is a temporary solution for his problem. A Pulpectomy is basically half of a Root Canal. When your dentist does a Root Canal Procedure, they are removing the nerve (Pulp) from the canal space within the root. This is the area that the bacteria is residing from his infection. Usually once this canal space is cleaned (with little files and medication) the canal space within the root is sealed up permanently with a rubber type substance called Gutta Percha. That is the whole Root Canal Procedure! A Pulpectomy is the first half of a Root Canal. The dentist will remove the nerve and infected tissue with the files and medication but not put the final seal in the canal space. This procedure is great for emergency situations to relieve pain and to remove most of the infection; However, like I said, this is only a temporary fix. Without the final "fill", the infection over time will return, but this will buy you some time to save up for the Root Canal. Sometime (not all Dentists do this), if the Root Canal is finished within a certain time frame, they will apply the fee from the Pulpectomy to the cost of the Root Canal.

The best option is to have his dentist put him on a payment plan, where he agrees to pay a certain amount each month and have him get the Root Canal now.

Also, try having him take 800mg of Motrin every 4-6 hours (this is the prescription dose), keep his head elevated and see the dentist!

Hope that this helps!

Can't he just have the tooth taken out, if it doesn't show too much? i know root canal is expensive, and it sometimes comes with a lot of pain. Sometimes the dentist offers the most profitable(to him) treatment when there's an alternative. You've done most of what I would have suggested, but here's a few more. Hold whiskey in the side of the mouth where the pain is, for as long as possible. Take a damp cloth and dip it into ground pepper, then rub gently over the gum. Some people bite down on a chilli pepper, but I haven't tried that one. Good luck. I don't have any insurance either, so understand what he's going through

There is a product on the market called Red Cross and it is for dental pain. I used to have bad infections that ran into my ear. Believe it or not my husband bought me some of this Red Cross and it killed the pain. You should be able to find it in a local drug store. I hope that it works for you as well as it has worked for me. Good Luck

Check back with the dentist office and see if you can go on a payment plan with them. You are wasting money on all these pain items when your bf needs to get that root canal done and area cleaned out and well..trust me..I know this personally. You will not see a relief in pain until that work is done. Most dentist want your business and are more than willing to work out a payment plan so they can ease his mouth pain.

do the root canal therapy as soon as possible. because if you postpone it, the tooth may broke &need more expensive fillings like post&core or buildups or full coverage crowns.go to dental schools. they are cheaper from offices.
for the pain try 400 mg ibuprofen(Advil) ,2 hours later acetaminophen codeine,2 hours later Advil again and acetaminophen codeine after 2 hours.
repeat these regimen if necessary. but you shouldn't take any of these tablets more than 4 g in a day.
he can take novafen capsules every 4-6 hours(only if he hasnt any GI "gastro intestinal"problems)

And while your doing all that, write your congressman and ask them where to get Emergency Dental Care. You can also ask at an Emergency Room, your Dentist should also have this information.
If Americans can rebuild Iraq I think we should be able to take care of our own.

To me Aulin or Nimesulid the generic brand worked very well.Obviously as soon as it wears off the pain reappears. But you know, every painkiller must not be taken for long times because it hurts your stomach at first. The sooner you go to the dentist, the better.

Relieving the infection is the ONLY way to get rid of the pain.
If one antibiotic is not working try another. Vicadin for pain.
