YES. Paxil takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks to become fully effective. After having suffered anxiety and panic attacks for many, many years, I have not had an anxiety attack or a panic attack since I was prescribed Paxil 5 years ago. Paxil has definitely changed my life for the better.

I used to take Paxil and it didn't do a thing to help me with my depression but then again everyone is different. What doesn't work on me may work on you.

Personally I have been on a lot of SSRI'S and the only one that has worked for me so far is Lexapro and Wellbutrin. My doctor just added the Wellbutrin a few weeks ago and it works great for me but then again I had heard so many bad things about it that I was afraid to take it but it works well. Good Luck with the Paxil and it takes 4 to 6 weeks to kick in. I just read the answer the Debra D gave you and it is not true that you need another drug to boost the Paxil. You only need to take Klonapin, Xanax or Ativan if you are Bipolar. All of those drugs are tranquilizers and only help with anxiety not with manic depression. I am Bipolar and take Xanax for anxiety. They will work well on their own without a mood stabilizer. The only time you usually need a mood stabilizer such as tegretol or Lithium is if you have Bipolar disorder and you didn't mention that in your post. Good Luck Hun

Paxil is an antidepressant and these doctors continue to be deluded by the drug reps who visit their offices into thinking these SSRI's help anxiety when they usually make it worse. What did the doc diagnosis you as having? Are you depressed as well as anxious during the year? If so, get an evaluation for Bipolar disorder. You need a definite diagnosis before they start you on anything. Antidepressants work for unipolar depression (depression only) and with bipolar disorder only if you are on a mood stabilizer as well such as lithium, lamictal, etc. If this is a temporary situation with anxiety try xanax or klonopin but beware of the addiction possibilities.

My anxiety is severe. I've taken Paxil with little success. In fact, I've taken a number of meds. for the panic - Only med. that has worked well for me has been valium.

Yes, I have. I took Paxil for two years. It took six weeks of taking it to see benefits, but I did feel better from taking it.

It actually made me worse. I felt suicidal. Then again no antidepression drugs helped. The only med that helped was lorazepam (aka Ativan)

I have been on four different meds for anxiety, and none of them worked other than making me either sick or sleepy.

I have had friends who said it really helped them. And it should take a few days to kick in. It is not difficult to adjust to at all. Hope you feel better soon! :)
