my doberman pup does that, the little madam, i find a sudden loud noise followed by a sharp "no" with a hard glare in my eyes does the trick.
if my puppy does it i clap my hands over her head, just once - not too close to her head obviously, tell her no and glare till she stops and looks away when she does that, i use my clicker and give her a treat, and she's learning very quickly.
i can tell when she's thinking about doing it, and just glare at her, and tell her no, i don't need to clap my hands at her anymore.
I've never had to smack, or shout.
it's a trick i learnt after watching the "it's me or the dog" TV show.

p.s, under NO circumstances do you ever smack or even tap your dog on the nose.
there are other ways and means of dealing with this in a kinder manner.

Do NOT splash water on him! You don't want your dog to be fearful of water nor to think a bath is some sort of punishment. That's what you'll get if you use a squirt gun or splash of water to thwart unacceptable behavior.

Never pull away and ignore him for any length of time - that will just make him wonder what happened. You made no effort to scold him for inappropriate behavior. Coming back later and offering him a toy will be a lost effort since pups don't have a retentive memory. They won't associate the two actions as being related.

Speak to him in an authoritative voice and say "No!" tap the top of his nose with your finger at the same time. Then hand him something that he IS allowed to bite and chew on.

Hello, I will try my hardest to keep this as short as I can. Ok, first, you are the pup's new mom. You have to tell the pup what is acceptable and what is not. It goes something like this:

Let's say the pup is with his mom, and he keeps nipping or biting at her legs, well I guarantee you that she's going to get tired of that because puppy teeth are sharp, and also this is an unacceptable behavior (to a point with her). She will use her mouth/teeth to let him know he's doing an unacceptable behavior. Same thing with your pants.

But, now it's you who needs to tell the pup this is unacceptable. Before you do this, always be in a calm/assertive state of mind with your dog. They feel your energy, and if the pup thinks you are not the pack leader, trust me even as pup's they know how and what you are feeling by the energy you give off.

So, what you do here is make a "C" shape with your hand; go ahead try it, or pretend your holding a glass in your hand, your hand should take on a somewhat "C" shape. Ok check it out, your hand has now become the pup's (real mom's mouth). What I mean by this is, your fingers are going to act like the teeth of the pup's real mom. All you have to do is gently touch your fingers to the side of the pup's neck, but hard enough to get his attention and to stop the unwanted behavior. While you do this, at the same time you can say a firm NO, or a Tsk sound. This sound with the correction from your hand will get your pups attention and stop the unwanted behavior. Try this on your knee or something first to see what I'm referring to.

Also, we all know how pup's love and need to chew, have plenty of chewies for him, I find the best are the hoofs you can buy at like PetSmart. Trust me on this once he gets a taste he'll chew that thing for a long time.

I wish you all the best with your pup; oh one more thing, never ever reward your pup for a behavior you do not want him to have. Let's say he's scared from whatever has happend, maybe a door slammed and he jumped, please DO NOT pick him up and tell him, it's ok etc. If you do, this will lead to further problems in the future, he will expect you to do this for him all the time. All you need to do in those types of situations is remain calm/assertive, and he'll feel your energy and know that everything is just fine and he does not need to be scared.

I really did try to keep this as short as I could. Take care.

You have to think in terms of the K9 species. What do you imagine its mother would do if her pup was snipping or pulling on her tail?

A snap and a growl. In this case, don't actually bite your puppy (besides, they're high in transfat - lol - all that sweetness you know).., but slap the floor beside it and make some verbal sound - like perhaps a loud "Shush" sound or "eh!" And of course if you want to make it a serious growl, go for it.

The puppy will get the message after two or three or so attempts. or should in theory.

they don't like citrus smells. get lemon essential oil and add 1 drop when washing clothes or buy perfume with lemon tones. or smack on the nose when they do it. or try pavlovs theory and reward them when they don't do it installing positive reinforcement

You distract him by getting something more interesting to do, IE nylon bone.

use his language--yelp 'OUCH' and walk away, as if it hurt you. ignore him for a few minutes and then give him a toy to play with.
