Ok so I bought a Ricoh Caplio R5 which I'm returning as I hear bad things about taking low light pics and its rubbish for when you want to take a self-portrait of u and your friends (finger covers flash because both are on same side!)

Anyway here are my contenders:

Panasonic LX2
Fuji F30
Canon 850 IS
Canon S80

Now i keep hearing about the high noise on the LX2, but i'm no pro so wont need to take pics at over 200 ISO??? Also i want the camera for all types of pics - beach, bars/clubs, daytime, holidays etc...so an all-rounder....i did want manual controls but im not sure if this is now that important, i do want to learn and hone my skills but may get a DSLR in future...are manual controls on compacts worth it?

Size Matters....and ideally it should be compact - I know the LX2 lens protrudes and the S80 is big and heavyish....

Help! I wanna exchange my ricoh today! I am doing the right thing by returning my ricoh R5?

Someone who is really in the know help!

Go with the Fuji F30. It will do everything you are looking for.

It's difficult to find the perfect camera, because each has its own pros and cons.
Canon 850 IS...compact & very pocketable, solid metal build, excellent image quality, high res. LCD screen, very limited manual control, wide-angle not so great. Can't compete with the F30 for high ISO shots.
Canon S80...forget it.
Panasonic...forget it (NOISE...at every ISO, including low).
Fujifilm F30...is THE best compact right now that performs impressively at high ISO 800 and 1600 (handheld, without flash). Great for low-light shots. Manual control (aperture and shutter priority, but not both at the same time), high res. LCD screen, no viewfinder, Not THE best for high contrast, outdoor shots.
I would definitely get the F30 (even just for the low-light capability).
Don't exclude other cameras, though...the ultra compact Canon Ixus 60 or 65.
Or the new Canon A630 or A640 (the one to get if you really want full manual control).
P.S. manual control is great to have, but is not absolutely necessary on a compact. But, is absolutely necessary if you want to 'hone your skills'.

You are looking in the wrong places! The one you need is the Olympus Mju 720SW, if what you are really looking for is an "All-rounder". The 720SW does it all. It's waterproof up to 3metres, shockproof - can handle a 1.5 metre drop. Has the most amazing array of preset settings for any eventuality - fireworks, night, landscape, portrait, behind glass, auction, candlelight, snow, beach, underwater macro - you name it, it's got it. It's also really tangible, and has good weight to it, as the body is made out of metal. 7.2Mp images are amazing, with real sharpness and true to life colours. I have a Canon myself, and bought the 720SW for my wife, but since then, my Canon hasn't seen the light of day. The 720SW is really superb, and I'm thinking of replacing my Canon with it!

I bought my daughter the Canon Ixus800IS and she loves it! It is light and fits in her small handbag or jacket pocket, takes great shots in low light at music gigs and is perfect for the "me and my friend at..." pictures. The battery is longlife and the large format viewfinder on the back is perfect. She took it on holiday to Greece and it took superb shots in all sorts of light conditions. You can do fancy things if you want with it or just point and shoot - it does both very well. Definitely the best and easiest she has ever used and we are a multi camera household!
