I don't think changing your mom's mind is what you should be most interested in. Your mom is concerned about you, and rightfully so. My younger sister used to cut her arm, and it started out as fairly benign, but once she accidentally cut so deeply, she went through the muscle and had to go to the hospital, get stitched up, and put on suicide watch. You're trying to transfer emotional pain that you feel but don't know how to express into physical pain, so you can understand it and feel it. If you feel like you can trust your mother (which myself and my sister could not) talk to her. If you can't trust your mother, find another trusted adult or call a hotline.

I found this hotline: 1-800-366-8288 It's called "SAFE" or "Self Abuse Finally Ends"

What you're doing to your body, although you may not see it as a problem yet, is really self-inflicted abuse. You should love and respect yourself enough to not intentionally hurt yourself. If you don't love and respect yourself, you need professional help to do so.

Take care of your mind and your body, and if you can trust your mother, let her into your life, and consider yourself very lucky. If you don't feel like you can trust her, please go to another trustworthy adult for help.

What your doing is what most people would call self abuse. This is something to talk to your doctor about. Or if you don't get along with your doctor see if you can find a counsellor you can talk to. It might take a while to find someone you feel you can really talk to but it's so worth it. :-) Really helps you to understand yourself and the people around you. Can be very, very interesting! I learnt so much from my counsellor.
Cutting yourself isn't really what people would call normal. Tho it's one of the more common problems around.
Are you having issues with school or other things in your life? Is life just getting you down or anything like that?
Don't hurt yourself even if it doesn't hurt when your doing it. Any wound can get infected and worse case scenario would be getting a blood infection and ending up in hospital. And you don't want that!! The doctors and nurses are never as good looking as the TV shows would have you believe!!!!
Find someone to talk to and try not to keep hurting yourself. You have to look after number one...and that's you! :-)

She is probably concerned because it's not a healthy lifestyle to get into, you can get really bad infections, scarring, possibly cut to deep and sever an artery, amongst other things. You should go to a physcologist and find out why you have this fascination with cutting yourself. It can really cause you a lot of problems down the road if left unchecked, some people have actually died because of this, especially people who have low immune systems, or have diabetes, both of which can develop without any warning whatsoever. Take better care of yourself and just try to realize that your mother loves you and doesn't want anything bad to happen to you. I hope that you will take my advice and at least talk to a qualified professional about this. Best of luck to you and yours. - James

you must have a problem, so you are cutting to make you think about something other than that problem. Depression is aproblem many people do not realize until they see what happens to themselves. Read about depression and see if that discribes you then go to a doctor to get help. cutting is only the surface of the problem it is not healty

Signs of depression;
A change in appetite and sleep patterns
Loss of interest or enjoyment in usual activities
Prolonged sadness
Withdrawal from friends
Feelings of worthlessness
Lack of energy
Poor school performance
Difficulty falling asleep

signs of depression;

Self injury – cutting, burning, head banging, or other kinds of self-mutilation are almost always associated with depression

Acting out – depression in teenagers may appear as agitation, aggression, or high risk behaviors rather than—or in addition to—gloominess

Suicidal thoughts or attempts – teens who are seriously depressed or despondent often think, speak, or make "attention-getting" attempts at suicide, which should be taken seriously

it's natural for a parent to be concerned...being 17, I guess you should be rational enough to understand that if somebody starts intentionally hurting themseleves, there is a reason to show some concern. I don't see why you should be cutting your arm though, I'm pretty sure there are other ways to solve whatever's troubling you, and besides, scabs and scars are not easy on the eye

It's very natural that your mom will freak out... anyone will... People who cut themselves usually get addicted to it and have serious problems or concerns that they fail to express so they end up cutting themelves to release their emotions such as fear, pain or anger. You're very lucky that someone loves and understands you... Some cases were featured in Oprah and I hoped you've watched it. Here is a sample case similar to yours... visit http://www.cushingdaily.com/statenews/cnhinsall_story_308190522.html
Don't ever be proud of doing it because it means that you're suffering from emotional disturbance. Go seek for help. Remember, someone cares for you...

shes concerned because she loves you and if your cutting something is wrong. There isn't much worse than watching a loved one go through pain and not knowing how to help. Let her be involved in helping you you shouldn't have to deal with feelings like those alone no one should have to live like that.

Your mum is freaking out because this kind of behaviour only happens when the person has a problem. People cut their bodies to relieve some kind of frustration or tension. If your doing it for no apparent reason then you should ask yourself why you are doing it.Talk to your mum and sort this out before it gets out of hand.If my daughter was doing it i would freak out too. Im sure your mum is not a dragon and im sure she will listen to you. Sort it out hun before things get worse xx

She is concerned about you because this is not normal behavior. Cutting yourself is a very serious sign of depression. You need to seek counseling and prayer on this very serious matter. I pray that this post is not a joke. God Bless
