the role of the police is to protect the people if you had no police you'd have chaos on your hands, yet in the states there changing the laws through the patriots act which is suposed to protect the people yet is being used against them look it up its against the constitution ,theyve slowly merged the police with the army for the last 15 years yet this doesnt get alarm bells ringing for the people ,there trying to slowly disarm the people in some states against the constitution ,theyve built 800 prisons that can hold 20,000 people each and are controlled by FEMA who can take control of the states in an event of international tension or financial trouble alarm bells ringing yet .youve only gota look back 70 years ago to realise whats going on .the nazis burnt down there own building the reichstag and then blamed it on the enemys to get public opinion for the nazis to take the rights of the people and go to war.all i can say about that is 9/11 now these are a tiny amount of facts.history is repeating its self the police are good peoples like everyone else yet they havent got a clue about whats going on and dont realise they are crossing the line .i know this is in america but what you gotta realise is what did the nazis do next .example when your randomly stopped and youve got a driveing licence thats out of date, like a women that refused to leave her car (all on the police car camera because the policeman didnt think he was doing anything wrong)the women was tazered and then arrested this is going over the line no,and sadly happens alot over there . what the police dont realize is there working for the people not the government untill thats sorted and the other hundreds of issues were all gona be shafted.http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=786048453686176230&q=terrorstorm

The police in the UK require a new officer to take an oath before being appointed a Police Constable.
In theory, if they broke the oath, they would be liable for disciplinary and/or criminal procedures.
The UK oath is,
Quote ""I, .. .. of .. .. do solemnly and sincerely declare and affirm that I will well and truly serve the Queen in the office of constable, with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality, upholding fundamental human rights and according equal respect to all people; and that I will, to the best of my power, cause the peace to be kept and preserved and prevent all offences against people and property; and that while I continue to hold the said office I will to the best of my skill and knowledge discharge all the duties thereof faithfully according to law." End quote.

It is one of those questions that has two verry different answers.
1, what the police actually do. and
2, what the police should do.
I believe the police should protect the innocent from harm by catching and locking up the guilty and violent. But in my town the police will avoid the violence and bother the people who are actually doing nothing wrong.
They are supposed to be responsable for ensuring the law is upheld and arresting those who break the law, their purpose is to avoid anarchy and chaos.
Other than that good luck with the homework.

The legal and technical answer, and the oath which is sworn is, "To uphold and maintain the Queen's peace".
The oath:
POLICE REFORM ACT 2002
The Declaration has now been changed under the above act. The new declaration shown below is sworn by new officers.
" I (NAME) of (TOWN) do solemnly and sincerely declare and affirm that I will well, and truly serve the Queen in the office of Constable, with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality, upholding fundamental human rights and according equal respect to all people; and that I will, to the best of my power, cause the peace to be kept and preserved and prevent all offences against people and property; and that while I continue to hold the said office I will to the best of my skill and knowledge discharge all the duties thereof faithfully according to law "
Their prime functions are:
The protection of life and property
The maintenance of order
The prevention and detection of crime
The prosecution of offenders against the peace

No society can exist without a police force. History has shown that the more dominant and totalitarian the state, the greater the need of that state for a large and powerful police presence. Yet it is equally true that no democratic society can exist without the police. It is the police who must investigate criminal offences and criminal acts prohibited by law. Without the police to investigate crimes and see that the law is upheld, society would be chaotic. Police officers have a fundamentally important role to play in everyone's daily lives. Quite simply, it is pointless to enact laws for the protection and welfare of society if those laws are not enforced, and that difficult task of enforcement falls upon the Police.
