Its the easiest thing in the world to kill a lobster or a crab prior to cooking BUT DO MOST places do it "NO" & "WHY" because they can't be bothered with it Grrrrrrrrr this is something that really gets my back up...I was a working chef for many years and up to a few yrs ago would not even be in the kitchen when any lobsters or crabs were cooked let alone do it myself. Then I discovered the humane way of killing them, place in freezer for a couple of hours, they don't suffer cos they are used to very cold temps on the sea bed where they go to rest, then once in sleep mode place a proffessionally designed bolt on back of head whack it with hammer JOB DONE, no pain instant death...THEN it can be boiled. ANY other way is cruel & in humane.

Yes, I think that that is a cruel thing to do to any animal.
facts about lobsters
- A lobster feels pain when being cooked or boiled alive
- Lobsters carry their young for nine months
Some lobsters are right handed where as others are left-handed
I understand that to live we need to eat. I did not state that I do not like to eat lobsters
You just asked if it was cruel. Yes it is cruel but as in he wild there is the surivial so that hunting is a part of life for all species.

Lobsters do not have a central nervous system and therefore do not feel pain. However one can put them into the freezer for an hour or two before boiling them if one is worried about it. Crabs on the other hand do feel pain and should be humanely killed before boiling. This can be done by putting a sharp knife up through the mouth into the brain. The freezer trick works well, too.

I don't believe that's it's any more cruel than the way other animals are killed for human consumption. Ever been to a slaughterhouse? A chicken/poultry processing plant? Or, how about the way that cattle are treated for processing for veal. Want the details of how those are done/treated?
For those who won't eat lobster due to the way it's killed for service at your table, visit one of the above or go to a farm where calves are raised for veal and you'll also not be eating chicken, turkey or beef! Those things seem to me to be a LOT more cruel than tossing a Lobster in to a pot of boiling water.

It's no more cruel than the processes that other meats go through before they arrive on your plate. You have to kill them someway, why not stick them in boiling water? And as for those idiots that reply with "How would you like it?", well I'm sorry but that is a stupid argument, if they felt things and acted like we did they wouldn't be lobsters, they'd be humans!! cockroaches can survive nuclear radiation, so by you're argument because they're okay I can subject you to radiation because you'll react the same way as they do? NO!! Fools.

I do think that is cruel. I have read that placing the lobster in a pot of cool water and gently heating it will "lull the lobster to sleep" and then as the water gets warmer it kills the lobster.
So....I have no idea if that is true or not.
If Lobsters don't have pain receptors, why do they squeal loudly when dropped into hot water?
Of course they feel pain.

No they have no nervous system so don't feel pain the way we do, also putting them in head first kills them very quickly as long as the water is boiling, some people say that they scream, they have no vocal cords so this is impossible the sound you hear is air escaping from under the shell. It's probably the most humane way to kill them and at the end of the day we are a predatory species.

No because the lobster does not have a central nervous system. It would hurt us (a lot!) but lobsters feel no pain. It is no more cruel than any other form of fish or animal meat.
I love those restaurants where you choose your own lobster and they bring it to you freshly cooked. Snap and enjoy - delicious! (Don't forget the nutcrackers!).

I think it is an inhumane thing to do.
Especially dunking it tail first. That's like dunking your feet into a boiling bath, do you like it?
Professional chefs kill them by putting a knife through their head, so its straight through their brain and they die instantly, and then putting them as quickly as possible after the kill into a saucepan of boiling water.
They only cook them alive because apparently they taste juicier, but the blood is still flowing when you kill them first so its just as good.
Apparently the lobster screams in the water, so would you I guess?

well i have to agree that i dont quite fall for the, put them in the freezer thing and they fall into a coma and then when they go in the water, they dont understand whats going on. Im sorry but this idea that throwing them into a boiling hot pot of water doesnt cause them any pain.......hmmmmmmmmmmm well i know that they also say the sounds of them squeeling while they cook is apparntly to do with the air being released from their shells, and nothing to do with burning them to death while still alive...........i dont eat lobster !!
