I am living in Germany and my husband bought me an Alsatian / GS for 500Euro. Exchange rate about 600 dollars. He did come with papers. Did we pay about the right price.

I am located next doors, in Belgium, and the price for GSD sounds normal to me. Actually, I´d say it is average price for average quality GSD. Cause with special parents, with dogs from working line or with many titles etc., you could expect to pay much more, even around 1000 euros for a puppy.
All what I say, of course is meant about dogs with pedigree. Non-pedigree dog for 500 Euro would be robbery.

You would be paying at least $1000 for one in Australia with papers. Not sure of prices in Germany. There should be breeders or kennels on the Internet which may give you an idea but it would also depend on the dogs bloodline and if its a good quality one. Colour, shape of its body and head.
Have you had it's hips X-ray-ed for hip displaceur.(Not sure of spelling, sorry!) If not, get it done ASAP! This is a known fault in the breed and can cause big problems.

It depends. What were the titles on his parents? Were his parents V or VA rated? You can get a top Shepherd in Germany from a good kennel if you know the breeder.

It sounds cheap really, I think in Greece they cost about 900-1000, but I am not sure. Then again in Germany they are indigenous so maybe they cost less.
