"Best" is very subjective. You need to answer some questions for yourself before you make a choice. First, what is your budget? The "best" cameras are quite expensive. You have to decide the the features you need too.

If you want to be able to edit the movies easily on your computer, especially if you are a Mac user, then you will want to choose a mini-DV camera that records to a tape. The Canon Elura 100 is a good budget camera for under $400.

If you don't want to easily edit the video on your computer, a DVD camera would be OK, but be aware of their limited recording time if you use the highest quality recording setting.

A hard drive based camera will allow a little easier editing and a much longer recording time.

Personally, I would not buy a sony product.

My first choice would be Aiptek Zoom DV-6 MP 6-in-1 Multi-Function Camcorder with 3x Optical Zoom, equipped with a 3MP CMOS sensor, priced less than $200. Second option would be Aiptek Pocket DV8800, 5MPixel camcorder. This does not have an optical zoom. I prefer these products because they are reasonably priced; they use memory cards as media instead of tape, DVD or hard drive, so no moving parts inside; light weight; compact; easy to handle; and reasonably good quality which I am happy with.
