I have a snoring problem that is very disturbing to my bed partner even though she uses ear plugs. I am overweight, don't smoke but I drink, so does that have anything to do with it. On one or two occasions my snoring woke me up. Are ther any successful operations that can be carried out or any other means to reduce or eliminate this habit?

There is a possiblity you have sleep apnea. My husband had sleep apnea and he would stop breathing for a few seconds up to 2 minutes, then wake up and gasp for air. This is a seriouse disease and people who are not treated can die from it.

I highly suggest you tell your doctor about it and have him schedule a sleep lab test. You will go to a sleep lab in your area and spend one night. They hook you up on a monitor with a lot of little wires that is painless and attached to your head, arms and legs.

Once you have compleated the over night sleep study lab, your doctor will receive the test results. If the sleep lab says you do have sleep apnea, there is an easy corrective surgery that will take care of it.

You will be sent with your doctors orders to the hospital. You should have your tonsils, adnoids, uvula (the thing that hangs in the back of your throat), the back part of your pallet, septum (bone in your nose straightened out or removed), and soft tissue removed from your throat. This is what they did with my husband. You will most likely be in the hospital for an over night stay while they monitor your sleeping. You will be able to eat popsicles and ice cream only while at the hospital. Once you get home, you will need to drink luke warm soup broath for a few days before trying to eat.

This surgery will save your life and there is a possiblity you will not need to be on a C-pap breathing machine.

Also you will have to loose some weight becasue if you continue to gain weight, then your tissues in your throat will become thick again and you will begin snoreing. Sleep on your sides or stomach and this helps with the snoreing problem until you get to a sleep lab.

Here is a web site that describes sleep apnea:

a snore is a sign of an upper airway or nasal obstruction, so you need to find out the sight of obstruction. is the snore coming completely from a nasal obstruction, or is it an upper airway obstruction. have an overnight oximetry done to find out if your oxygen saturations are dropping. if there is a sawtoothing pattern in your oxygen sats, further investigation should be done, like a formal sleep study. investigate sleep disorders at the american academy of sleep medicine, or the association of polysomnographic technologists website.

People with heart problem and BP are known to be snoring. If you have breathing problem, you may have it. I suggest that you learn yoga, breathing exercises and meditation and practise them religiously and you will find the difference.

Learn to be comfy with sleeping on your side. If you sleep face up, snoring becomes inevitable.
