He has chosen the top of our stairway and the only carpet in the house just about! We were home and available to let him outside, but he chose to poop upstairs instead.

He is 9 years old and has been potty trained for a long time. We never leave him alone in the house anymore because he gets so miserable, so we take him everywhere. The pooping accidents are happening while we are home. He isn't giving us the signal at all, just going upstairs. Frustrating. . .

We just went through training a west highland terrier and quite frankly when she had an accident it was our fault since we missed the signals she was giving out. The crate idea is great and if we were not around to watch her she went into the crate. No accidents in there at all. If we were around we kept her on a light leash and she went everywhere we did. Any time she started to get restless or sniff-out she would go. You don't mention how old your dog is. Sometimes a dog that is trained will regress for a variety of reasons-perhaps they are trying to tell you that they are upset ,maybe there is a change in the home like a new baby,a move etc. Hitting the dog is not the solution but I certainly would take our westie to the area she had messed and would ask her very quietly "Who did this?" Without fail she would get upset. I would then take her outside to her toileting area and give her the command to do her business. She hasn't had any problems for a long time now. If you notice your dog heading to the area where he has pooped before get him outside quick. Best of luck.

Hire a dog walker, walk him more often, or crate train him. Those are your options. A dog poops in the house because he has no way to get outside and do it. They are clean animals, relatively speaking, and do not foul where they sleep. That includes inside the home once they are housebroken.
*****after your update******
You are not giving your dog enough walk time, or he is seeking attention. Providing there is no medical issue, those are your only 2 options left. When your dog has an accident in your house, when you are home, providing there is no medial reason for it, it is your fault. It sucks to hear it I know, but that is the way it is. Walk him more, let him out more, hire a dog walker or come up with another solution to get him out where he can go.

some dogs has a signal before it poes. Maybe if he does something strange, you could try taking it outside. OR just bring your dog to a school that trains dogs

Take a newspaper and roll it up, and take your dog to where the mess is, and pop him on the nose with the paper. It won't hurt, the the newspaper makes a noise that scares them. Plus, put newspaper in the spot where the dog does poop. That totally ruins the carpet and pad.....I know!!!

get him a crate. dogs learn to love their crates. keep walks on a strict time schedule. even if you find poop in the house still stick to the time schedule. they like to know what to expect and when.

when he does it grab him and show it to him say NO NO NO!!! then pop him once or twice not hard and if a small breed be gentle then when he is outside spend alot of time with him give him to to do his bussiness then when he does it prais ehim say good boy good boy and play with him then give him a small treat or a pinch off of a treat and always take him out the same door when you take him to potty and before long he will go to that door and stand or sit when he has to go but i think males are harder then females to train
