It depends what you mean by pray.
There is 'salat' which involves not only prayers or supplication in words but also some body movements of standing with your arms folded slightly below your chest, bowing and then prostrating (like kissing the ground) and repeating this cycle either twice, thrice or four times depending on which out of the 5 'salats'. At every position, muslims recite in Arabic, prayers usually involving praising God, the Beneficent, the Merciful, Mostworthy of Praises.
Compulsory salats are done 5 times throughout the day at specified times. The optional ones, suffice to say, can be done anytime up to how many times as you please.

There is also 'do'a' - a form of prayer where you sit in contemplation and ask God anything that you wish for, world peace, happiness for yourself, for others. Anything at all. Muslims pray for their parents, their children, friends and whomoever they wish well. This can be done anytime, anywhere, in the buses and trains. It can be said in a whisper, loudly if the occasion permits and best in tears of humility. The prophet Muhammad taught specific do'as for various occasion in the daily life; you recite something specific the moment you wake up, put on your makeup, combing your hair, putting on a dress and I am not kidding, there is a specific do'a for everything and this ain't Dionne Warwicke lyrics.

'Salat' takes precedence between the two as it is compulsory and a Muslim is judged by it on Judgment Day.

Statistics shows that only 20% of Muslims worldwide perform the salat regularly, let alone use the do'a as a daily habitual practice. Hope that this might answer your question.

There are extra blessings if you pray more but 5 is all that is required. I read a Hadith (tradition) about a Muslim man who said he would do only the bear minimum of what was required of him as a Muslim, and he was told if he did that he would get into Paradise.

Mandatory 5 times a day.

Voluntary prayers are always voluntary and are performed before and after the mandatory prayers.

Thank you for the politest question of the day sister.

:)

The 5 prayers are obligatory prayers. There are other types of prayers that Muslims can perform if they choose to do so or if they have to (e.g. funeral prayer).

Basically, there are 4 types of prayers: Fardhu (compulsory), Sunnah (not compulsory but you will get rewards for them), Wajib (necessary), and Nawafil (voluntary). For more explanation visit http://www.islam.com/salat/typesofprayers.htm

the obligatory prayer is 5/day, no reason of lazy or not.
If u cant make it when u are sick for example, u must replace it as soon as possible.

But btter if u are able to do other non-obligatory prayer.
eg; daily repentance prayer, witir( closing ) prayer etc.
