I need to write a song for English class. I've never done anything like this before and it'd be great if anyone had any tips for me.

Audacity would be the best program to use as you can record, edit & mix your tracks together. It's available for practically all the current OS's & it completely free!
You can download it at http://audacity.sourceforge.net , but you'll need to download LAME separately (as you only need the one library file. This is also free.) if you want to make it as an MP3. Go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3 & then select the OS version (Mac or Windows)
The only thing I'd suggest when you start recording is that you do each instrument / singer separately as much as possible in order to create the "Master Track" (which is something that professional music producers create when mixing a song) & gives you the most control for editing purposes.

Most good music editing softwares are free for only a short trial period. If your using a Mac GarageBand is definitely the best. If your not then I suggest Wavosaur (more plug ins than audacity)
