Sorry, we don't use symbols, we use words.

河 or 江, but if you're talking about rivers in general, it would be safer to use 河 (pronounced like "her" without the "r")

Sorry, I want to make a correction. If you're talking about rivers in general, I think it's better to use 河流(since it sounds more natural). But when you're talking about a specific river, like Nile, then use 尼罗河, Amazon river -- 亚马逊河, note that the names of the rivers end with 河,not 河流.

It depends on how long the river is. Generally, 河 or 江 are the two characters we usually use when we refer to "river", as in 長江 and 黃河.

溪 (xi1) is another character for "river" (at least in Taiwan), although it is often translated as "stream" or "creek". In fact, a 溪 is longer than a creek but usually much shorter than 河. In Taiwan, many major rivers are 溪 instead of 河, as they are short and swift.
