In the Old Testament of the Bible, the prophets were used to reveal God's will to the people. In the New Testament of the Bible, when Jesus was about to ascend into Heaven, His disciples begged Him to stay with them. But Jesus said that it was not profitable for them that He stay on earth because if He went to Heaven then God the Father would send a helper from Heaven to us on earth. This helper, the precious Holy Spirit of God, is to reveal all truth to us for He is the Spirit of Truth, and He will teach us all things, and be a Comforter to us. So, to sum it up, Old Testament, God used His prophets to communicate with His people and in the New Testament He sent us His Holy Spirit 50 days after Christ's ascension into Heaven, on the Day of Pentecost to communicate with His people. May God Bless You!

Without doing a search, my instincts tell me that prophets are certain types of people, down through the ages, who seemed to have a special link with spirituality and knowledge of a super being often referred to as God.

They've established a following, and few can come up with evidence that disputes their claims.

Prophets tend to make believers out of non-believers.

Amos 3:7 For the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will not do a thing unless he has revealed his confidential matter to his servants the prophets. Acts 3:21-24 God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets of old time. In fact, Moses said, ' Jehovah God will raise up for you from among your brothers a prophet like me. You must listen to him according to all the things he speaks to you. Indeed, any soul that does not listen to that Prophet will be completely destroyed from among the people.' And all theprophets, in fact, from Samuel on and those in succession, just as many as have spoken, have also plainly declared these days. So we can see that God Jehovah revealed the things he would do to his prophets so they could reveal them to us. And part of that was writing these things down in the Bible Scriptures. Well they foretold the coming of the Messiah and of course I believe everyone pretty much knows what Jesus came and did for us, dying for our sins so we could gain everlasting life. Older times prophets gave warnings to Israel that God was going to punish them for going wayward if they did not turn back to him. Foretold the fall of Jerusalem, her captivity in Babylon, her release from Babylon and the rstoration of truth, Daniel foretold the succession of world powers, and wrote down information concerning our time. Other prophets such as Isaiah also wrote of future times and what it would be like in God's new system of things.

If you mean in the Bible, the prophets' role was mostly to speak the truth to Israel as inspired by God, to sort of keep them on the right track, and only incidentally to foretell future events.

Moses...to give us all those commandments
Daniel...to predict the future for us
I know that's not all of 'em, but that's what they were for, to tell us how to always be ready for Judgement Day
