Because they're uninformed people who don't understand that Christmas was never even started for the birth of Jesus. His b-day was in a completely different season, and the Christians took the holiday from Pagans and gave it their own meaning and name. You probably know that, that's just for people who think Christmas actually has anything to do with Christ.

It does not matter where you live there are people of many different back grounds and religions. Not everybody believes in xmas. Do not forget that many people problems, they may not have any body to celebrate with. So on the holidays they feel more alone than any time of year. So when you wish them a merry xmas you are rubbing it in their face. It would be better to say have a good day.

It's about politcal correctness. I've never actually encountered hostililty to wishing people a Merry Xmas--I've actually encountered more rudeness from people for wishing them a "Happy Holidays" only to have them come back with "It's Xmas--why don't you say so!" and similar.

I'm glad you find it funny that you offend people. *eyeroll*
Happy Holidays would be a much more polite approach when you don't know the other person's religion. Not everyone is xtian. Many people can't stand the concept of xtianity. "God Bless you!" and "Merry Christ's Mass!" are both pretty arrogant and presumptuous things to say. You may think you're being polite, but many people don't appreciate have your backwards religious beliefs stuffed down their throats. I suppose it's the equivalent of saying "May Satan's dark blessing be upon you!" to a xtian. Rude and offensive. But polite enough to the person saying it.

Just wish them "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" instead. Personally I think that even I didn't celebrate Christmas, but someone nonetheless wished me a "Merry Christmas" i'd be grateful to them for wishing it. I can't see how anyone would be offended!!!??? This is political correctness gone extreme.

I get offended when I see "Xmas" because you've totally taken the Christ out of Christmas.
You're always going to offend someone hon. Just say what you want, and let other people worry about their own feelings.

I personally do not know of anybody who has been offended by that. But to answer your question, people are self centered and think you have bad manners by doing that. I wish they would worry less about things like that and more about the real problems of Religion.....people killed in the name of "God", entire countries requiring you have a certain faith, Religions stating everyone who doesn't believe as they do will burn in hell,,,,and on and on.....

Maybe because they are cheap like me!
Last year when it was just Happy Holidays I saved a ton of money not having to buy Christmas presents.
And darn it won't you know it Wal Mart has brought Christmas back so I am going to have to buy presents this year
Seriously just keep on being polite. It is nice to hear Merry Christmas for a change..
