Prayer is no good.
We can't face problems in the world such as:
(global warming, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, sting-rays being defensive, etc etc)
by using prayer, science proves this.

Instead of wasting your time preparing for
an afterlife, spend this entire life preparing your future generations for their lives and so on.

The one's who didn't evactuate New Orleans
just sat back and prayed that the hurricane
wouldnt flood New Orleans. Wow!!! Their prayers
were answered huh? They didnt leave b/c they were
lazy and thought prayer could help divert the
hurricane. WRONG! We as a human race have to take onproblems in the world Face-to-Face, not Face-to-Thought.

For every-thumbs-down I get, please pick up a piece of trash.
You'll find it more effective than praying.

I read this book once, by a woman who had had a near death experience, and she described seeing people's prayers as beacons of light shooting outward from the Earth to the Heavens. The more people that prayed together, the thicker the beam, and when in dire need, the beam is brilliant, and angels are attracted to this.

edit: I didn't answer your question, did I? How do I know they are going? I once asked of God: Let me employ people. And it was done. (I'm definitely NOT the type of person who is a employer type person. I wish I DID have a figurative ruler within me, but alas, I am spineless) But for the most part, I pray like this: "I offer this prayer for the one you deem most in need of it, Lord." So, I cannot know where my prayers go, nor what they do. However, when I do NOT pray, terrible things happen in the world. This gives me the sense that I can pretty much steer the world through the cosmos if I so desire.

It's a bit like picking up a phone and talking down it and hoping that someone is listening to you at the other end. It's a massive leap of faith that there is an all seeing, all hearing presence. Praying can be good for the soul as it is a way of articulating how we feel. So sometimes the fact that we are just saying what we're saying is the answer and if some great and mighty presence decides to hear us and act on it , then great. However the main point is praying is a personal thing, a way of asking, thanking or otherwise vocalising our feelings!

The word is faith. That's how you know. Through all the pain and sorrow and hurt and death, and disease...etc, you have faith. Faith, that someone, our savoir, died for YOU. He suffered unjustly. Faith that when he returns, you'll hurt no more. This life, was just a test of your FAITH. That's the hardest part. Things and people and situations and money and no money, tempt you. When you pray, not asking or begging for stuff, but be thankful for life and the opportunity to be apart of His Glorious return. In your prayers ask for forgiveness, ask for mercy for others. Show that you are sencerly not selfish and that you can't wait to see Him. You'll get a feeling that is special to you and you'll know. But when you're not living right you'll know then too.

It sounds sad but those that suffered during Katrina (and after), only feel a potion of what Jesus felt long ago. And it's going to hurt like crazy. But like Job if they can stick it out and keep faith in Him, they will be rewarded. This world is just temporary. If you believe as I do you don't want this life to be your "final stop" after death. I want to get rid of this shell of a body and be with Him.
Smile He loves you.

The gift of prayer is a direct link to the person that created you.
Just like when you were born you had an umbilical cord that linked you to your mother :)

and "juglingsuns" is right if we want to stop Global warming we have to take action not pray that the problem goes away.

Ephesians 3:12 tells us that because of Christ we have boldness, and confident access to Him

Luke 11:1 says the disciples after Jesus prayed asked to be taught to pray. Jesus tells them in verse 2, when you pray say...
This is an outline not a pray to say word for word. It is set up as a letter. Who are you talking to?

The same way you know that your mail is going where you think it's going. As long as it's addressed properly, it will go just where you want it to.
