I wear my poppy with pride (Canadian here), what makes me sad is the symbol for one of the most important times in history is also a great cause of a current conflict in the world. Afghanistan is expecting a bumper crop of poppies which the drug lords turn into the drug opium and help finance the Taliban which many of our countries have soldiers trying to end insurgencies and bring order to a chaotic nation. Its a bitter sweet remembrance day this year.

Millions have died for our Britain and many civilians too.
The life we lived with food shortages while working twelve hour shifts six days a week before belling called to fight was terrible.
Most lost someone any many two or three sons from one family.

Today we are frightened to go out after dark on foot.
Our local rail station is taken over by gangs after 8pm and our police can only call the Railway Police.
Politicians threaten our lives.
What we paid for after the war has been given away to profit takers.
Yes we remember our loved ones and our friends and how their efforts were wasted most days of the year.
For the U.K. it starts at 11.00 and finishes at 11.02 and that's the truth of it for today's population.

I was selling poppies last night in Leicester Square tube station and am sad to say most people did not have them and were not buying them. In fact my most enthusiastic buyers were Dutch. The British Legion badly needs more volunteers - if you can spare time next November, please offer to help sell poppies and help the vets.
