I am a nursing student who just finished a rotation working in women's health and that included adolescent, teenage and young adults. Basically the textbooks reflect the true problem with diets of most young people in the USA today - too much junk food, not enough dairy (you need extra calcium!!!), veggies, and fruit. The protein (meat, cheese, etc) needed should be lean with minimal fat. You do need a small amount of fat in your diet but "good" fats like olive oil and canola oil should be used. The carbohydrates (bread, pasta, cereals) should be complex - made with whole grains so they have more nutrient and fibre content. Protein, calcium, and fibre seemed to be the things most lacking in the typical young diet. AND...of course, being physically active is a very important habit to develope.
