You have to be tough when needed, sensitive when needed, understanding and polite. Not all cops can do it...but the majority do. It's pretty hard to do your job and not be tough when some stupid, drugged-up, drunk idiot wants to fight back because you're trying to arrest him for beating the crap out of his wife. The officers I work with put their lives on the line every day ... just on "normal traffic stops" because they are NUMBER 1 on the list of calls that most cops get killed at. Number 2 is domestics. Guess what calls the cops go do most often on a daily basis? So yeah, you have to be a bit tough ... and it can be extremely hard to do that job.

there was some research did several years ago about who wanted to be come a cop, the answer was 87%of the people who were cops were bullied around in school or was picked on and did not handle them selves very good on average, supposedly a psychiatrist in Calif, who worked for the L,A, police dept, said that the police exam was designed so that the only ones who they hired would be the ones they would be able to brain wash, Metropolitan life insurance co keeps files on every occupation or trade that way they can charge their premiums accordingly, starting at no 1 was test pilots, certain chemist,, explosive experts etc no 22 was a farmer, roofer steel worker
cops, was in 127th place fireman 136th place, these static its are pretty accurate, so how dangerous is a cops job? or fireman's? and if they are tough how come it took 17 of them to shoot a 53 year old lady that wighted 114 lbs who was wielding a knife they shot her something like 44 times in L,A, your decision

"toughness" can mean many things.
In 1973, I moved to Richmond, VA (USA). and did a civic program where you ride with the police to see what they go thru.
We got a call about a drunk at a cheap hotel. The cop repeatedly asked the man to just go to his room and sleep it off. The drunk, a short german-accent man, was so drunk the policeman held him up by holding onto the man's jacket. The drunk (white) repeatedly cussed the cop (black).
The cop finally called for a wagon to take the drunk to jail. Once the wagon got there, the drunk refused to get inside. After a while (30 minutes ?), the drunk was physically put inside the wagon by 2 cops.
The cops never responded with anger, and never hurt the drunk.
Richmond may have been the capitol of the South - but I was amazed at how tough the cops were to put up with this cra$.

Just how do you mean tough? The best cops are those who have brains and are in good physical shape. I think the hard part is the emotional aspect of the job. You see the worst side of most people. That is why one of the tests is psychological.

Tough in terms of the physical aspect, but when it comes to anything else, a cop should be one with a lion heart.

Maybe it is tougher to be a detective. Cops mainly sit at dispatch, direct traffic, and are called to mediate arguments. It is, by their own account, a boring job over 95% of the time.
I went to a lecture hosted by Dr. Henry Lee years ago. You may be familiar with him from cases like OJ's, the Kennedy rape, etc. He oversaw the goriest of the hideous in his state, when things were too stinky for detectives and coroners to handle. He said that they often take situations lightly, or they'd be very affected by what they see. They often joke around while taking pictures and all, trying to go through it easier.

The first thing to be a cop is to have a balanced sense of justice and an understanding of how people function.
If you cannot be happy in teamwork forget it.
People do make mistakes, errors and blunders even cops are human.
Without them modern society is unthinkable.

Yes, you do need a degree of physical and emotional toughness to be a policeman, otherwise people would ride roughshod over you from day one on the job.
